        I used to have one of these. The only good thing you could say about it was that it had a nice exhaust. It was the non desmo motor so it was as gutless as buggery and they had flimsy bottom ends that kept blowing up. Electrics were fuckkng made from spaghetti and there was always something not working. I once got the entire fucking thing rewired. It only had a single disc with a master cylinder designed for the dual disc systems so if you had to stop in a hurry you were in trouble. And no electric start. Kickstart only. A bad bike in its day and even worse by modern standards. This fuckwit us dreaming.

            MAnd that’s the paradox. Shithouse bikes from the 70s and 80s are worth more than the good bikes simply because they so shothouse and therefore they’re rarer because they’ve all blown up or been crashed. My 1977 R100RS is probably the finest long range tourer ever built and an absolute classi c in every sense of the term, but isn’t worth as much as an early model a Honda 4, simply because they weee so well built that there are still plenty of them around and parts are still readily available. Shits me sometimes

                Well not really. It wasn’t entirely without charm. The sound of the v-twin with Contis was unique. The only other 90 degree v-twins on the road were Guzzies and they were way too exy for me as a student. Even Harleys back in the 80s were pretty rare - nowhere near as common as they are today. And fuck me if I didn’t feel as cool as all shit when I could march up to the bastard and start it first kick. So it was pretty good for pose value, but that was pretty much it.

                  I would have said the R100RS being quite vanilla is the reason they are undesirable dollar wise.

                    When you’re in the middle of fucking nowhere vanilla is exactly what you want. That’s why they are unrivalled as a long range machine - simple technology and built like a brick shithouse

                          R100RS... Ever have to replace the valve guides? Smokey horizontal cylinders do that.

                          You want a great 70's bike? Guzzi 1974 750S. Last one sold in WA went for $25K and I wouldn't sell mine for less.

                          Or more for that matter. What a sweet bike.

                            “Were” unrivalled as a long range machine at the time. There are lots of bikes these days that could do the job equally as good or better and things have progressed on in different directions like adventur tourers etc, sports tourer, tourer , dual sports . Modern day simple technology all built like a brick shit house with more capability.

                            As a classic i agree they potentially are but the only thing that limits them now ( in my opinion...) is that becasue were / are a good long range bike they tend to clock up shit loads of ks, and i mean shitloads which can kill resale value to someone after a classic. Catch 22, Rightly or wrongly.

                              It’s not just the reliability. It was the shape of the fairing and riding position. The RS had almost perfect aerodynamics and was a far better bike than the corresponding RTs with their barndoor fairings. Optimum speed is about 140. At that speed you’re tucked in behind the fairing with perfect wind/body balance. And it works so well I can ride through fairly heavy rain without getting wet, although my ankles still get wet.
                              But as far as longevity goes the odometer only has 5 digits so I have no bloody idea how many times it’s gonecaround. But engine rebuilds are a piece of piss because they are so simple and parts are still readily available. Also as they run a dry clutch the gearbox runs in proper gear oil, like a car, rather than being in the crankcase and running in engine oil like in other bikes. I reckon old r-series beemers are unique in that all parts are still readily available. Reason simply is that they were built to last and built to be rebuilt.
                              And so called adventure tourers are overrated. Have yet to find a dirt road that I can’t take the RS down. The low centre of gravity of the boxer motor makes them a piece of piss to handle off road
