  • 600cc superbike market has dissapeared

Was reading the latest copy of MCN & they have an interesting interview with BMW Motorrad boss Hendrik von Kuenheim. He's talking about the development & product positioning of BMW & other motorcycles in general.

    Here's part of it:
The last point is the financing, particularly in North America where our Asian competitors had very young customers, particularly in the supersport 600 segment which, by the way has totally disappeared - it does not exist at the moment. Those customers are like 20 to 22 years old, and right now they cannot get any finance in North America.
Can anyone shed more light on this?

sounds like he's just saying that the market that the 600cc bikes appeal to have no money to buy them so its not even worth trying to sell 600cc bikes.

The man has a point though, especially in america where the bigger is better mentality is king.

Given most of the next gen thou's will come with wheelie/traction control and switchable maps (or has the switchable power mode fad passed now?) and are roughly the same size/weight as a 600, the age old argument of newbs killing themselves more easily on a thou are not all that valid anymore.

I was under the impression that the main reasons to get a 600 over a thou was agility for the track (which is a somewhat niche market as those who buy dedicated track bikes are a relatively small proportion of the bike buying community), size weight (this has not been the case for a few years now) and as a step up bike from RE restrictions. If a thou can serve as a step up bike just as well or better than a 600, what's the point of a 600?

Any wonder ?? .... the rest of the country is in the shitter. Why would any finance co fund the next gen of junior class riders (presumably). Not sure of their walkaway clauses in the US on m/v but when you can leave our keys under the doormat when you decide that your next holiday takes priority over your last 24 mortgage payments due who can blame them ? Simple mathematics and good business practice.

Nath, if we did we would be in the same fucked up pre(dick)ament that the US finds itself in. There is no such thing as 0%. There are NO FREE LUNCHES in the 21st century nor any other - plenty of swift talkin but nothin comes for free.
