  • Did I get taken for a ride?

    Hi guys

I'm a new rider bought myself a second hand bike and for my own peace of mind took it for a service.
I was told I needed a big service as the bike was coming up to 12k and a new front tyre which I knew when I bought it. All up it cost me just under $1100. Is this about right or have I been taken for a ride?

Fark what sort of bike is it???

Did you get a complete list of what was done to it??

For that price you had better have bought a Duc!!!

Did you get a quote upfront?

Couple of hours labour for inspection and valve clearances etc, oil and filters, tyre plus fitting, maybe some spark plugs, you'd need to look at the list, it's certainly not cheap but if they've charged you for what they've done and done it properly then that's what the job is worth...

Did you get taken for a ride? Probably not but the life lesson is to confirm what you want done, if you're able to do some yourself then do it and either get a quote or set a dollar amount at which they call you before proceeding with any more work.

If you can't do it yourself then that's the price you pay, if the bike is now reliable and you have peace of mind then it was worth every cent.

A major service that includes checking the valve clearances can cost you up to a grand depending on complexity.

Why would you be checking valve clearances at 12K

12K is nothing oil/oil filter, plugs and maybe coolant.

                  Hi guys

                  Thanks for your replies.
Yes it is a hyosung gv 650.
For peace of mind as I know very little about bikes, yes it was worth every cent.
They have given me a list of what was done but didn't itemise any of the price so I don't know what was charged for the tyre. Next time I know to ask about pricing first.

I don't know the service schedule of the model in question nor did I know the model in question.

Some get valve clearances checked at the 1,000km service eg. Cbr250r some trail bikes and motards are overdue by 10,000km too many possibilities for me to have given a specific answer, so I went with the one size fits most approach

Here's the maintenance schedule - I'm no mechanic but removing carbon from the cylinder head & cylinder sounds expensive, and you've got valve clearance inspection in there too. $1,100 though?

I had my bike's 12,000 km major done and was shocked when I was quoted around the $900 mark. I rang around and found similar prices. It actually worked out much cheaper as it didn't take as long as expected. I think I paid around $600. When I was investigating the reasons for checking the valves I came across some threads on gixxer nation where people mentioned if the valves can be out at around 12000 but it is extremely uncommon but they check for it anyway.

If you want to know if you got a good price just call another workshop and ask them for a price to do that same service.

Forgot to ask, did you get any new brakes pads or tyres etc? They really add to the cost.

Out of curiosity, I would be interested in seeing some sort of paper work of what exactly was done, and then checking to make sure it was actually done.

Also, well done on not naming them and totally bagging them out. (as is the norm) Its good to get all the facts first etc etc.
