  • Haggling

When buying a second hand bike from a dealer, is haggling usually part of it? Some of the prices I've seen are pretty steep and I'm wondering if that's the "Someone might be dumb enough to pay this but we'll haggle down" price.

For example, I saw a used 250 for sale at a price that redbook.com.au claimed the bike was worth new. And I don't think this was a one-of-a-kind mint condition bike either, all their prices seemed to be like this.

      Getting the best deal

And if they don't budge on price...ask them to throw something in...like a new pipe, tyres, helmet or even your next service.

Don't buy their hard luck stories...they will always come out in front!

How much do you reckon you could haggle down a bike advertised at say, $5k? Reckon you could get them to $3.5?

Depends on lots of stuff, how busy they are, how much they think you're willing to pay for it,

But most of all, it depends on what they paid for it... no dealer is going to make a loss on a bike, they are there to make money. I think you'll be pushing it from $5000 to $3500. I would be thinking more along the lines of $4000-$4500ish depending on the season.

Sorry to steal ur thread dude.

A similar question: Is there much room to haggle when buying a new bike? or will u always gett ripped off for buying new (aside from the instant depreciation that occurs when u sign the dotted line)?

P.S bastett best advice I have heard so far is to go to the dealers on the last sat (or weekday) of the month, just before they closing, and begin haggling then. That way they are more likely to budge to give you a good deal on account as they will probably want to boost their monthly sales, and not to mention itching to go home!

I can't say I've ever got a new bike , but I would haggle out all the dealers and see who wants to play the game.

Some places won't even talk dollars until you start writing on their offer form, forget that. Tell them that you want to talk dollars now and then you'll sign the form if they do the right thing.

Bargaining should be your prime objective when buying anyt motor vehicle. Bargain till the last dollar, don't feel guilty about it because its YOUR money you are playing with. When I bought my bike the guy was asking 2300 for a GPX250, pretty neat condition, I got him to give me 6 months rego, a jacket and a wheel lock for $1800. Never ever show too much interest in buying that bike, for eg don't say "Oh look at this one this is awesome, my god this is great", because then they think you are overly interested in it and wont drop the price too much. Make it seem like they are keen to sell it. Milk them instead of them milking you. Don't go in there thinking that this is THE bike and I am going to buy it, think that this is half decent bike lets see what happens. And when you bargain, never say "I was thinking 4000 or 4200", just say the lower number. I know you might be pushing it for 3500, but I would start with that, who cares what he thinks, tell him what you want it for. Start with a ridilculous number.

Personally GPX_gal I don't think i would buy a new bike, they are worth too much. 16 grand is a lot to pay for a brand new gixxer. Get a year older model, with a few thousand ks and you will get a much better deal.
On the other hand if I had money coming out of my hole, I wouldn't buy anything BUT new. hehehe.

shit I have gone on for too long... I should shut up now

lol... thanks dude, finding a nice second hand gixxer hasn't been that easy so far Haven't ridden an 03, 01s are okish, but they seem a little heavy on the steering and heavy as a bike c.f. to a 03 636 or 04 R6

ok. I haven't ridden any of those bikes there. So I couldn't say I agree with you.

Be patient you will find a second hand bike thats good enough.

                            I might be getting a CBR900 '96 for 7k. Soonish.
