  • n00b question #2 - Lane Splitting ??

After listening in on a discussion about lane splitting on Wednesday night, I have come to realise that I have absolutely no idea on how to lane split correctly.

Can someone please enlighten me to the correct way to lane split please, or show me to a link to explaining it.

    Thanks in advance

Ummm nevermind... I found this function on the forum called 'Search'. Nifty little function which I should use more often.

    I found a link to a previous discussion ... http://www.perthextreme.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=548

Basically think of it as overtaking the car on the left and do it accordingly.
Ie go from right most side of left lane indicate right go to the left side of right lane and whoila.

You cannot go from Right to left as that is considered overtaking on the inside of the car in the right lane.

Now you cannot cross the continous white line leading up to the intersection (last 3 meters I think) If you cross that your up for 3 demerits and $150.

      Just some pointers,
If you lane split try and only do it when you see the light go red OR you know intersection well.
Try not to lanesplit moving traffic as you get some fuckheads who think its funny closing the gap in on you.. Happenes quite often as apparently we should wait like everyone else :/ (Thats where kevlar gloves come in handy)

Try not to do it infornt of cops coz if they had a bad day they will get you for something if they can (some anyway). I got done once for apparently corssing the white line which was BS but i had to grin and bare it...

Make sure you keep your bike in gear and don't day dream or you will have upset cages all around

Watch out for cats eyes when slowing and taking off.

      Hrmm i hope this helps

I probably do it illegally but I just weave down the centre dodging car mirrors and finger gestures then pull up to the left of the solid white line. Therefore it looks like you've overtaken on the right of the car in the left lane and not on the left of the car in the right lane!
          Clear as mud??

As long as the cars are stationary lane splitting is not overtaking, whether it is left or right.
Just be sure to indicate if you cross the white line's and do not cross the solid line at all.

When a cop pulled me over he explained the above. I only passed em stationary and didnt see the d.
