Unusual near miss

As if there aren't enough things for riders to watch out for, a new
one very nearly got me a couple of days ago. I admit it is a bit of
a freaky co-incidence but it happened. I was going about 60 km/h
and approaching a level crossing, the road was fairly busy with
traffic. About 5m before I got to the level crossing a car coming
the other way went over the tracks. The bumps caused his front
hub cap to come off and this thing flew past my knee at a
combined speed of maybe 120 km/h, missing me by no more
than a meter. It made a very loud bang as it hit the car behind me.

If it had hit me just that impact probably would have shattered my
knee, let alone the follow on implications of me probably falling off
in traffic. It goes through my mind at each level crossing now and
I adjust my timing relative to on coming cars.

yeah, i get worried whenever a car on the freeway has a loose hubcap near me, i have seen a few come off at that speed and it may not really hurt a cage, but i am fragile....

Try baby shoes on the freeway, one on the front wheel arch into the radiator, the other one down the side into my boot. Hurt like a bastard!!!!

Yup, stuff like that happens . I also heard that you gotta be careful on freeway too 'coz of all the shit on them. One guy had a gyprock board smack into his front wheel. It fell of someones ute and truck in front of him literally launched the thing into bike. He ended up with broken collarbone and messed up bike.
I guess this is one more reason to keep the distance from the cars in front.

I was crossing Mount Henry Bridge years ago and a milk crate blew out of a trailer in front of me. It bounced all over the place so I couldn't decide which way to go. Luckily I managed to miss it.
My girlfriend though was on a freeway in Geelong in heavy rain when she saw a shower of sparks ahead. Then she saw a 4x4 spare wheel spinning across the road after falling from under a vehicle.

my idiot mate in a cage going pretty fast around a corner reckons his hub cap came off.. rolled accross the road, hit the middle island, bounced over a car and into the street. He said after he decided nobody was hurt/no damage he lost it laughing.

ALso.. i would never ever travel near a truck or anything with a load. I will pass them or sit very far back. My auntie was killed by cement cylinders that came off a semi trailer last year. It reapeared on the news the other night actually.. the guy who didnt tie down the load is in deep shit.

Trucks are pricks........I was going up the freeway once when a length of 4 by 2 fell off the truck tray, bounced once then whistled past my head.
I shudder to think what would have happened if I wore that....... :?

Masda74 and Stan had a little run-in with some dead roo on reid hwy last week, ute ran over it, flicked it up, hit Stan's foot, then flew past Masda's head at about 100km/hr. Just seeing it happen scared the hell outta me :shock:
