If you're considering the big Zed, also take a Blackbird for a squirt. They are very similar bikes, but you can't go past the 'bird for build quality and that great engine - more refined than the Zed and better top-end kick.
The 'Bird will cost you more, from around $10k through to $14k, depending on condition... but it has no real down-side when compared to the Kwaka, apart from a slightly more sport-oriented riding stance.
All of the above presumes you're dabbling in the 2nd hand market. As always - try everything b4 you buy.

Chuck Norris is 1/8th Cherokee. This has nothing to do with ancestry, the man ate a fucking Indian.

Dude,
The last time I owned a Honduh it put me in hospital! But I can tell you now there will be nothing other than a Special K being parked im my garage.
I will be going for a 2nd hand '11, probably a 2000 or a 2001 model. Pity they only come in drab burgundy or grey colours. My current Zed is a funky 2 tone blue. Although historically Kawasaki occasionally used to lose the plot when it came to colours.

Thanks for the advice.

Hi Scoundrel,
I know this is an old post but did you get the zzr1200? If so I would be interested in your thoughts as you dont here much about them.
Cheers

Hi there. You will be making a good choice with the ZZ11, they are generally a sound and reliable beasty. I have fairly extensive experience with them having owned/modified/'warmed-up' and all round beat up on a few. At one shop I worked at we did bucket loads of 11 engines for speedway, roadrace and dragracing and found them to be as reliable as any of the other jap brands. The good thing about Kawasaki is that for the 11 motor you will be able to enjoy interchangeability between the 1200, 'c' and 'd' model 1100's, '88-'90 zx-10's, 900R's and 1000RX's. Not all parts are direct bolt-ons but most major components are easily fitted with minor modification and heaps of them around at wreckers etc.
The most important thing to remember is that preventative maintainence will render any of the jap 4 a good, reliable choice of big-bore motorcycle. These maintainence costs will be about the same for all brands if it's done at the appropriate interval. Because I own Kawasaki's doesn't make me cycloptically brand-loyal, I've owned a shit-load of other bikes from other manufacturers in various engine sizes in both on and off-road configurations, so I'm trying to give you a wholistic and unbiased viewpoint. Anyway, let me know how you go and remember, try for a low kilometre unit in fine aesthetic fettle. ('you get what you pay for' 9-12k$ will get you a nice one from '99 on.
