  • Front Number Plates....again

Just to let the list know, I attended a meeting today and apparently the
Department of Planning and Infrastructure is pushing ahead with their plans
for front identification tablets for motorcycles (along with an increase in
registration fees which has already been passed).

I thinks it time for bike riders to unite as a group and enter the political
field. The best way I can see of doing this is to support the MRA.

its up to you, if nothing is said the legislation will pass though unopposed
So there you have it boys and girls. Reliable source too. I tells yah if this comes in there's no point in getting another motorcycle.

my dad crashed his bike ages ago coz of a front number plate, it rattled loose and as he came to a stop at a set o lights, it fell forward, under the front wheel and locked with the forks, launched him over the handlebars in front of everyone at the lights

              OK OK
I have just read most of the article and I am disgusted with how we have been treated and are continued to be!
What do we need to do to stop this ridiculous front plate crap, when they can just introduce the cameras that take front and rear as in another state over east??
What do we need to do, because it sounds like we need to act soon!

instead of that.. wouldn't it be best to have a poll with your name stating your objection to this coming into place?
ofcourse you'd need to have some anonyminity to it as I'm sure people don't want their names being splashed on the internet.

                    Just a suggestion

Polls are good for us, but the ppl making these changes (on our behalf) probably don't visit this site much...b-)

BTW - email is just between the sender and recipient. Your name won't end up on the Net unless you put it there.

Plus, I rekon that if something is worth your time and conviction, then you should be willing to standup and put your view forward. Even if it means showing who you are.

Flakey.. true, but most of the people on here don't want certain authorities to know their real identity, hence the use for nicknames
that's why I thought it'd be good to have some sort of way to hide your name from everyone else, but still register it on the form

Prolly the best way to go about it is to speak with everyone down at scabs and get everyone to sign up

                              To Miss Mactiernan

I wish to voice an opinion on the introduction of front number plates for motorbikes. As I'm sure you are aware there has been some discussion and opinionation from both sides of the argument since the decision was made. As a rider and a driver I see both sides of the scale and can see where both parties come from. I have read documents that have disproved the introduction of such an item as they are deemed a waste of time and money. For instance, why is that we don't take a leaf from the book of other states and have both front and rear, or just rear photographs for speedcameras ? I quote from an article on the MRA WA website (www.mrawa.asn.au).

“Technology exists for speed cameras to simultaneously photograph both the front and rear of speeding motorcycles or indeed any other vehicle. This method is endorsed by both the RAC and the MRA,” Mr Stockwell said.

So why is it that we don't implement this kind of thinking. This is a much safer option. It seems to be that the government is only looking for the money. Because an implementation of this magnitude will indeed need to be covered. I can't see the government paying for such an exercise to be accomplished. So where will the windfall lie ? It's not quantum physics to realise that the costs will hit the motorcyclist rider in the hip pocket. One reason to have a bike is cheaper running costs, Petrol, Insurance, Registration. Again I quote from the MRA WA website,

Mr Stockwell said, “Should the Minister decide to ignore these recommendations and pursue the issue of front motorcycle number stickers, then, she must address whether such a measure justifies the substantial cost. The cost to implement front motorcycle identifiers in Victoria, which has approximately twice the number of registered motorcycles as Western Australia, is estimated at $13.8 million, with subsequent ongoing costs of $0.94 million per annum.”

Is it an exercise to stop motorcyclists from speeding or an attempt to remove whats seen as an unsafe vehicle off WA roads ? It seems completely unjustifiable to have a motorbike with 1/4 or just under 1/2 the engine size of that of any automobile and pay relatively the same registration costs. If the motorbike is seen as an unsafe vehicle maybe we as a society should look at whose point of view we are perceiving such a vehicle from. Even driving in my car I feel unsafe. People will only drive the best they can once in their life, their driving test. I think the call for front number plates has come from a majority of car drivers who feel like we are a menace than a call for safety. Why doesn't the government stop trying to please the majority and start trying to please everybody. If I had a dollar for everytime I've been cut off on a motorbike or in a car I'd be a millionare. The intended money should be spent on education to both riders and car drivers not just hitting the current riders because that will make car drivers feel warm and fuzzy. This is the feeling of a vast majority of riders, not just me. So stand up for everyone and not just the people who only drive the best they can once in their life.

                              Regards

                              Nick Kilminster
