RIP rider - of course he would have walked away from the prang if it was a different type of barrier.

              RIP..

Just worth a mention as well, it's a shame it actually has to come down to people being mutilated before anything is done about this. Not that I would wish this upon anything, but lets hope his death wasn't in vain eh?

I Wonder what the minimum speed where one of these things would cut you half would be?

                40km/h?

All it takes of some guy to merge ontop of you, and you're suddenly going to find yourself in one piece too many. Hopefully this will serve as a major wakeup call, and get them banned completely, possibly under some kind of Geneva convention.... Cruelty to Motorcyclists?

Email Myth Busters with it. They'd probably do it.

(And that means they'll go to the Bone Room again, and that makes me smile.)

RIP rider and condolances to family & friends,

as a foot note to this sad occurance
The MRA in all states, in fact similar groups in all countries battle legislation and attempt to get there removed,

Remember maximum support gets maximum publicity remember.. how many went on the protest ride?

The WA Government has set aside $40,000 for a study group to verify information from other countries who are removing the cheese cutters

The MRA is also trying to identify non compliant cheese cutters to further the arguement, they have found posts installed the wrong way round, posts not installed to the required depth, maybe start taking your own photos and sending them along with information into the MRA? This an event organised to make other road users aware you are there
it is attended by many politicians who can be made aware of concerns of motorcyclists

                    Like I said....
                    maximum support gets maximum publicity

I hope I am not accused of whoring this thread, that is not the intent

Dunno whether you're serious or taking the piss, but they probably would do it, yes.

Sadly, it wont lead to anything.

The govt looks at the scenario and says "How many people have died on these in the last 5 years?". Few, probably less than 5. Then they will say "how many would have died anyways when they hit a armco style one ?" and because its hypothetical, and we know bikes speed, you can say 90% of those few would have still died. Because dont forget armco style ones still kill because of the posts.

So the result is, its a unavoidable loss, were sorry, but its cheap, its attactive because its not solid like concrete barrier, and its easy to errect. It stays.

Sadly the only way you will get this stopped, is to design something safer, as cheap or cheaper to make and install and sell it to the govt. For them to rip it up, and re-do it in concrete walls .... is wishful thinking.

Sadly, it probably wont go noticed.

Yeah, I get that a lot.

For the record; this is my serious face.

Is there any actual data to support the histrionics about these barriers? Sure when you hit one at speed you get minced - but, I repeat, is there any solid research supporting the notion that these increase the chance of death as opposed to just changing the number of handy pieces in which the corpse arrives?

Someone correct me if my understanding is wrong about this, but I thought the MRA's focus with the cheese graters wasnt the removal of them, more like retrofitting them with shields and whatnot so they present less of a cutting risk?

At the protest ride Dave Wright showed Kobelke the styrofoam pad that locks into place around the post of the barrier. IMHO its the post on these things that do the most, lethal damage, the wire part is just an efficient cutting tool.
