  • suggestions/ guides for prospective rider

hey, i'm lookin to get a bike, and will get my lic. soon, just curious.. what's a good first bike, i know how to ride, of course, just don't want to pay thousands for a bike i dislike the feel of.
n yeah, i think i'll be getting a 250, due to laws and all, twostroke or fourstroke.
    thanks

ps, also any strong tips for first bike picking/ riding? =P

buy the shittiest 250 for the cheapest amount you can. you are only going to come off (250 standard: you must fall off) and then in a year or less, you ARE going to upgrade. i made the mistake of buying a good 250, for 6,000. buy one for 1500 to 2k and you'll be right. its just to see your year through.

When ya go lookin, take a mate with ya, for support and to pick at the bikes... Obviously, the more he knows about bikes the better...B-)

BTW - most mechanics will look at a bike for ya for around $50.00 - worth every cent if it looks good, but is hammered on the inside...

Just look everywhere and ride everything you can.

Yeah, i'd say to get something u feel comfortable on, that's why i got an RGV heh, yeah right...

RGV is good for some mad two stroke action, and was fairly cheap aswell, but i must admit i wouldnt mind having a bike with a nice cushy seat but i wouldnt wanna be on a slow bike either.

Best bit of the RGV it when hits powerband, ur off!

Well u could always buy my 2002 Honda NSR 150, which is for sale.
Great 1st bike, and it's only 1 year 3 months old, and hasn't been crashed, unlike most cbr's zx2's etc which are 10 yhears old, have had 10 owners, been crashed 10 times etc

Buy it.. u know u want it.

              $4500.

I would have to disagree with the common consensus of just buying the cheapest nastiest 250, have it for a year and then spend big on the next bike.

Even if you can ride a bike, it is all very different when you ride on the roads all day every day and you need a reliable safe vehicle to learn on.

You can buy a 500 dollar car whose brakes are shot and handles like a Volvo and you wont get hurt but when you are riding a bike (especially in the early days) you want a machine that works properly, brakes and handles well and has no little gremlins that can suprise you when you have it leaned over and are wringing its little box off.

I would recommend buying a near new 250 that wont suprise you with 'dicky brakes' or gearbox problems, ride it for a year and trade it in on your proper bike.

And hey, if you come off it...thats what insurance is for.

yeah right. like you would claim on a 250. Insurance would then be an impossible for........the rest of your life.

but yes you do need to buy a reliable bike with no 'gremlins'. but if you get a cheap one. make sure you strip it down, new sprockets, chain, brakes, brake fluid, fork seals, etc etc. also tyres if needed. some 250's haven't been ridin for so long the tyres are rotten.

                    another 2c.

jezuz, im just about to pay 10c...gettin up there......

                      Nah they're still good..
Tyres are new, rings are new.. brakes are obviously good
nothing to be spent or done.
                      so there

yeah i second that. buy the cheapest bike you can but make sure it is safe. i made the mistake of paying 6k for the first and it still ended up giving me headachs. save your $$$$ for the upgrade just get something cheap to get u though the first year.

i agree with boofhead on not buying the nastiest bike u see just cause its cheap ......

the other thing is if ur planning on riding a sports or supersports when u buy a big bike and u get "postie" style bike first up the feel is soooo much different ur just a hasard to urself .. riding position, cornering are all very different... so uve just wasted a year and not gained any experience..

                            Churchy....

i claimed on my 250 which was stolen. insurance for full comp on my blade was $733 for a year.

Regardless of that, i wasnt suggesting spending big on a 250 just dont get a 1 grand slapper which is dangerous and unpredictable. And not to mention all the 'gremlins'

guess it all counts on how you wanna ride. got to get something dirt cheap reliable and pest sprayed for gremlins. my 2fiffy was infested they rewired and kept biting my chain links.
