SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Harley-Davidson Inc. shares jumped more than 7% on Tuesday after Citigroup cited improving retail sales trends in its upgrade of the motorcycle giant.

Harley (HOG) stock ended up $1.73 at $25.02 and have now risen 47% since the beginning of the year.

Citigroup pushed its rating up to hold from sell and raised its target price on the stock to $26 from $14.

"Based on our channel checks, we believe U.S. retail sales trends for [Harley-Davidson] and the overall heavyweight motorcycle category have improved since" the second quarter, analyst Gregory Badishkanian wrote in a note to clients.

"We attribute the improvement to the better overall economy, which has also benefited other leisure segments," he added.

Badishkanian also said a shift in senior management with Keith Wandell at the helm and a focus on cost cutting is "exactly what the company needs

It is study time, hitting the books pretty hard, all night .

Look at this chart of Harley Davidson, pretty interesting data. Once the economy gets up and running you would expect their share prices to soar back to healthy 40's. Dunno about the ''leading the economy part though .
