  • Why are bikes not getting faster (1/4 mile) ?

1990 GSXR1100 had stats of 1/4 mile in 10.0 seconds.

    2009 CBR1000RR has 10.3
    2009 YZF-R1 has 10.5
    2009 GSXR1300R busa has 10.2
    2009 GSXR1000 has 10.3

It seems like the new bikes have much better top end but are lacking torque, or usable tractability or something..

    Anyone know the answer?

Because they are lacking extended swingarms, When will the manufacturers learn

My guess is that those times aren't entirely accurate, given that the 08 GSXR is roughly 60kg lighter, and is 30hp more powerful with about the same amount of torque.
Quarter mile times on a spec sheet aren't good for much. If you put the same rider on both of those bikes, the newer bikes would consistently run much quicker times.

Although Satan's theory is fairly solid.

Yeah I'd like to see someone with a stock 1990 GSXR1100 do a flat 10.

                From here:- Motorcycle Specs

"The bikes ran so evenly that only a stopwatch or the dragstrip's eye could note a difference; our street testing put the two in a dead heat, though the Suzuki was noticeably stronger in the middle of the rev range. At the dragstrip, both bikes blistered the track, the Yamaha outsprinting the Suzuki, but only barely. The FZR left the line well despite an abrupt clutch engagement and bombed to a 10.54-second, 131.0-mph blast, a tick quicker than the Suzuki's best effort, a 10.58 at 130.2 mph. It doesn't get much more even than that.

10.0 sounds a bit suss when the above is taken into account

Seriously, Short wheel base + High horsepower + Lightweight = more probability of flipping your shit rather than stupidly quick quarter mile times. This was a non-issue for a weighty beast like the gsxr1100's.

Strap the front's, extend the swingarms of them all and compare 1/4mile times, I bet the old bikes aren't in the same league.

Also law of diminishing returns comes into play, it gets harder and harder to wipe off seconds off of a 1/4 mile time, especially when the bikes are being setup for the track not the strip.

                    ahh

yes their 1/4 mile times are shit..
The reviews consistantly give different times.
                    Thanks..
Still doesn't explain why most R-1 riders can't keep up with me tho

Only a stopwatch could tell the difference! Science strikes again!
