• fzr400 3tj / yzf600 thundercat hibrid take two

Hi all,
Thought it was about time I got this posted, I bought the fzr400 from PSB member 2wheels, must be over a year ago now, to do the 600 into 400 hibrid. Well due to doing lots of work to our house its taken a bit longer that planed.

First problem was finding a low mile engine, one came up on gumtree a import from the USA planed for a kitcat, came with full loom and carbs and was in vey good condition, a quick clean and was good to go.

When I bought the bike, 2wheels had painted the frame and swing arm matt black but I never liked it so this was all stripped off and polished by hand. ouch

Bought a early R6 front end from two wheel wreckers, but then found a nice R1 front end so this is ready to fit with the help of some diff head bearings.

Wheels have been powder coated and look better than new, all other parts cleaned or polished. Clip ons from Harris performance in the UK, R6 shock ready to fit with the adapter from projection components they also made the engine plates as well.

So things going well and got the engine and wire loom fitted, still lots to do and will update as things go on

here is the link to 2wheels post.

That looks terrific Ken and you seem to be well advanced with the build. I think you should spend less time on the house. Is this destined for the road? It is too pretty for the track.

Hi,
hahahah if I want to get out and play in the garage I have to do as Im told with the house . yes its going back on the road, did a VIN check before I started and all was clear.

Was doing a few things on the bike today and Im finding some parts missing, so will be putting a wanted ad for fzr/thundercat parts.

I'm sure this looks like my old bike?

Hi Solrak,
It is for sure, same stickers on fairing and sticky carbon on tank, when and why did you sell it?
It looks a bit cleaner now, fitted R1 front end today and test fitted r6 shock and fz1 rear caliper and gave it a quick polish to get rid of finger prints.

Looking really good delicaken! Will be watching this build with interest. Would love to see the fzr in the flesh when its done. Had some good times on her. I bought the bike from the eastern states as a step up from a 250cc. Ended up selling as the bike was too small for me (188cm) and it needed the carbs overhauled. Also there was a rattle coming from the cam chain and I needed the $$ at the time for renovations. I think it had about 45k on the clock?

Hi ya,
Been getting along slowly as had a real problem shortening the throttle cables and getting the throttle to have a smooth action, but after 3 trys all is good. Fitted the switch gear, that was easy thank god. Got tyres on to the wheels today and test fitted, all looks good just need to sort out the front ride height. Spent a fortune at probolt on titanium and stainless bolts :o any way its off the ground and looking a bit like a real bike

Nice work. Should be a stomper with that little frame, a 600 engine and up to date suspension.

Hi ya,
yes got a couple of new ones, although it does not look a lot different most of the work has gone on under the tank, like sorting the run of the loom, checking the engine and full service, all water plumbing done just got to fit thermo unit and fuel pump, so going to try and start her up tomorrow fingers crossed.
Im not going to use the seat sub frame as Im looking at fitting R6 or bmw s1000 unit, so will have to make up my own subframe. Also sorted out the headers ready for end can.
Any way here are the pics,

Hi Ya,
A little up date, well its running well, just needs the carbs set up, had all today working on the bike so got loads done. I have decided to put the bike over the pits with standard bodywork and sub frame then if it passes I will change the seat unit before getting paint work done.
couple of pics at end of play today

I have known what paint job I am putting on for years, I have kept a magazine from 1998 with a feature on the attack performance race bike, so any one know a good paint shop who can do this:-

Great to hear the bike is running. The colour scheme looks excellent but complicated. potato has a good name for paint, but the stickers look like a specialised job. Tim BlackFZR might be able to help or give suggestions for the stickers.
