  • Synthetic Oils - what and when ??

I'm told the Mobile 1 MX4T is a very good full-synthetic oil. What do some of you that run a fully Synthetic oil recommend ?.

I would also like to know when can I put full synth oil in my engine, some people say to wait till at least 6000km, other say thats a myth and it's ok after the engine break-in period (1600km) , what are your thoughts on this ??

    Thanks

From all the mechs i've spoken to, I have been told not to run full synth oil until your bike is fully run in, and this can take upto 6,000kms(?), maybe more....

My bike has done just over 40,000kms and I run fully synthetic, but it's really is as run in, as it's gonna get...

I put in Silcolene (purple in colour) and have not had any issues - quite the opposite, the gearbox feels great and the engine runs a little quieter too...

    My 2 cents...

Is that an "energy conserving" oil ?? I know some Silkolene oils are EC hence they are no good for motorcycles with a "wet clutch".

This is stuff designed for bikes...

Well, I'm paying 'fully synthetic motorcycle oil' prices for anyway...

Nah, it was recommended by my mechanic - who I trust heaps!!

I'll see if I can find out the details of it, I have an old bottle around somewhere...

Then is must be a none EC oil, I just know some Silkolene oils are, they most likely make some motorcycle specific ones that are not.

Still wondering if 2000km is way to soon for a full synth, I always hear 6000km+ but latley I'm hearing from some people that seem to know what they are talking about that after the enitial break-in period it's fine to run full-synthetic. I'm not sure if I should do it. I would like to run fully-synthetic ASAP but not if it's going to be detrimental to the engine if it's done too early.

I wonder if anyone has a expert opinion ?

A 'Spert' is a drip under pressure...

a pinion is a type of connection between two shafts...

            Can't say I have one!

"am I good - or what????

My personal bike OIL maintainance schedule is strictly:

              0 - 1000ks: As Delivered Oil.
              1000 - 2000: New Filter & Cheap & Nasty Workshop Oil.
2000 - 4000: New Filter & The Best Synthetic Money Can Buy.
Every 2000 thereafter: New Filter & The Best Synthetic Money Can Buy.

I dont keep bikes long, but I feel better knowing the next guy who buys it will appreciate it.

So on the eight day, after wasting time faffing about with unimportant guff like heaven & earth & the waters & sky & creatures [& having a wee kip] & man.... God created PSB (GenesiSX-R1000)

deej: Every 2000? Woah.. that's often. Mine goes every 5000km, and even I think that's overkill.

Then again, I guess you have oil circulation problems - being on the back wheel so often, most of the oil probably just sits at the back of the sump waiting for gravity to help it out and find the oil pickup.

Thanks for the info Deej, I think I will follow that very same Oil schedule.

Yeh. If yer ever at scarbs, speak to Kev (of his bro - Disturbed). He had my old gixer apart for a 25,000 odd k look last week and he put it back together again and didnt touch a thing. This is a bike that has spent 10% of its time with the front wheel on the ground.

Good clean oil. The most important thing for any bike/car. Ask the next cab driver you see why they get a million k's out of their engines. Remember too, with bikes, you have lovley flakes of gears & clutch floating around in their as well seeing your gearbox/clutch share the same lube.

it's never a good idea to go straight from a mineral to a fully synthetic in one change. your probably safe to use a semi-synthetic at this stage, then go for the fully synthetic next change. I do my oil every 2500 but only change the filter every second oil change. One of those filter magnets are also a good idea cos they really do work (stick it on the side of a funnel next time you drop your old oil and see how much shit there is floating in there)

                            Mobil Oil

Aza I have used Mobil Racing 4T since 1996.

I did however wait until the 12,000 km service at the mechanics recommendation.

At the time it was in a 919cc Blade which Honda themselves reccommended Mobil Oils to be used in Australia. Mobil was also the oil used by the Honda Australia Racing Team.

However to put a spanner in the works I had a meeting with a 'rep' the other day who states the MOTUL OILS are the only oils now in the world to meet the new stringent standards just adopted? Sales pitch??? I will look into and report back.

Motul is made in France though and no one likes the French!
