  • Best way to clean exhaust systems?

I have two exhaust systems that I want to clean up.

One I need to remove some surface rust and paint. The goal is to be able to get it cleaned up ready to be painted/powder coated.

The other system is stainless steel which over years has a brown build up on it. I want to polish it back up to reveal the stainless steel.

What is the best way to do these?
    Sand blast?
    Sand paper?
    wire brush?

    Thanks in advance.

no 1 exhaust : I would use 800 grit sandpaper on all areas of it to get the rust scale off ,then go over again with 1200/1800 grit paper to smooth off and finished with wax and grease remover ( come in a can ) then its ready for painting ( primer then top coat ) ..

no 2 exhaust : ive used 1800 grit sandpaper( DON'T USE ANY LOWER GRIT PAPER ) with water on mine , followed by washing it down in warm water and soap .. then once dry ... autosol the whole area with two clothes , one to apply and the other to wipe off ... or you can polish with a buff wheel on your drill with autosol

    hope this helps

Number 2 Exhaust - I would try Autosol... You may be surprised at how it comes up.

PS: Autosol is a polish, repco and supercheap sell it, everywhere else probaly would too, find it best when its on a microfibre cloth.

You could get the 1st one soda blasted. I agree with the Autosol on the 2nd one.

Autosol with 0000 grade steel wool. worked a treat on my ZZR exhaust.

Bumping this.. Just bought a bike from Geraldton. Was sitting stationary for most of its life not far from the beach and looks like some surface rust on the exhaust.. Any ideas how to clean this? I think it's a steel exhaust..

A proper buffer will give the best results with chalks and wheels designed for stainless.

Time/effort/money for a buffer is more than I'm willing to outlay on this bike.. It's just a Kawasaki

I read on the internet that WD40 & a scourer can sometimes do the trick on surface rust. I tried it quickly after work and got good results for 5 min labour. Below is the before and after:

I'll likely remove the manifold on the weekend and give it a good scrub.
