  • Honda CB500F Wont Start

    Hey Guys,
    Jumped on my commuter this morning and she didn't want a bar of it. I had only a short time to fiddle with her before jumping in the car so it's not much to go on but here is what I know;
Turn the key and everything carries on as normal, all lights, indicators, horn, high beam, hazards, dash... everything works.
Press the starter and nothing, the head light dims as usual but the engine doesn't turn.
I don't think it is the battery because if it has enough juice to power the high beam, indicators, horn and such then it would have enough in it to try turning the starter motor, at the very least I would hear the old 'tick tick tick'.
She is basically stock standard so it's not some shoddy home repairs gone wrong.
My first thought was that the sensor wasn't reading that the clutch was pulled in but I have no idea how to test that thought.
Any ideas on the best place to start?

On a related note what is the parameters of the statutory warranty on second hand motorcycles from a dealer and does it cover electrical? The Honda is a 2013 model with 29,000km bought from Rick Gills about 1 month or so ago.

    Cheers,

Thanks Pnork. I saw the same advice given to somebody about there CFMoto. I have never seen a battery be at a level where it could power all of the lights and such but not give the starter motor even a nudge but I will certainly take your advice. I will run home at lunchtime, rip the battery out and have it tested. Will let you know.

when was the last time you rode it?

Batteries can be your best friend until you hit the starter. It's at that point, the battery will be working it's hardest, and if it isn't fit enough, it won't play.

Nope, still probably the battery unfortunately.

              Have you checked the killswitch?

Also does it have aftermarket levers at all? Sometimes on the lower settings that can affect the clutch cutout switch making it think it's in gear

Thanks, yep I checked all of the usual stuff. Not a silly suggestion, I am sure we have all done the kill switch trick before.
I rang my local parts supplier who also said that "if the headlight dims when you hit the starter it will be the battery". So I have ordered a new battery, the old one looks like its original which makes it 5 years old and due for an update anyway. Will keep you all posted.

Ps.My apologies to all for starting a whole new thread about what may turn out to be a low battery. In my experience for the bike to have enough juice to fuel all the lights it should have had enough juice to make the solenoid tick so I thought something much larger was looming. It looks as though I will have learned something by the end of today though.

Leave the old battery in it.
Bridge the starter relay...under the seat ????
Just for a laugh...instead of pushing the start button.
Go ON ... you know you want ...too.

Gsx but I assume you mean bridge it temporarily to see if it starts, bridging it permanently would turn the starter motor constantly? Are we basically talking old school hot wiring but with the key in to disable the immobiliser?

In any case it wouldn't work beacause, as most of you already knew, it was indeed the battery. In todays class I learnt that a battery can have enough charge to power everything on your bike but at the same time not enough power to whack the starter solenoid!

As usual, thanks for all your help people and for taking the high road in not making me feel like a twat.

It's an oft asked question, along with "Is Splitting Legal?" "Which Motorcycle should I Buy?" and now "Do I have to Sit for my "R" if I've had my "RE" for 2 years?"
