  • Rear axel nut torque setting

    Hi people,
Can anyone tell me how tight the rear axel nut should be tighened?
Mine (zxr250) seems to be not tight enough right now and i don't have the manual for my bike.
I have a torque wrench handy, and would like to know what torque settings other bikes use as a guide.

    TIA

Tight. Not so tight that you have to hit the spanner with a hammer just to get it off next time, but tighten it as hard as u can by hand without busting your boiler and then lever it a touch with your foot.

This is for aluminium axles and axle nuts mind you. Cos they get threaded easy if you over do it.

If you have a steel one, perhaps it needs to be tighter........ duno on that one.

      Thanks Deej
I guess I can tighten it much more then what it is now. Currently the axel moves back and forth a bit after a hard ride.

I have been told that if u make it too tight, you can wreck your bearings aswell - so you want it tight enough so it don't move...b-)

I'll retighten it this weekend and see how much more it'll tighten before it resists to be tightened any further.
Although I'll have some trouble doing this with a fractured rib or two..only realised today the pain was from fractured rib. I ran into a guardrail last friday...

On the matter of rear axle nuts being tightened up... how do you tell if it's not too loose, not too tight without a torque wrench? I mean I adjusted my rear wheel last night for the first time ever doing on any bike and it felt ok on the way to work today taking into account the wind... Any suggestions on this ppls?

Rear axle nut aint an exact science.

I will refer this post to the resident mechanical guru 'Pablo Pete' for his comment.

There is no real risk in over tightening. Tighten hard without busting your arm.

If you want exact.... a rear axle should be around 93NM.

Make sure the chain adjustment is correct IE: wheel alignment and 30 to 35 mil freeplay.

                    Thanks for comming.
