  • Gearing

    Hey Peep's,
Am thinking of changing the gearing on the R1 just wondered if anyone has done/knows someone who's done it and how to go about it.
Want to get better pick up in second and third, I know you have to either go down on front sproket or up on back, but for best results what do you guy's think.
    Slim.
P.S. Isn't there a way of changing both sprokets to get better take off but not sacrifice top end, i.e.go down on front and up on back or does that just cancel each other out....hhhhhhmmmmm?

    Sell it and buy a Gixer. That will solve the pick up problem in 2nd & 3rd (&4th & 5th & 6th)..

    (*runs*)

So on the eight day, after wasting time faffing about with unimportant guff like heaven & earth & the waters & sky & creatures [& having a wee kip] & man.... God created PSB (GenesiSX-R1000)

One more thing on 'gearing'.. who short-shifts and who uses the clutch?

Does short-shifting wear the gear box out or the teeth or anything if you do it right?
      mmmmm sacrilicious

I cluchless shift on 100% of occasions when i am accelerating reasonably hard or great than.

If you do it right, it should slot in like a Bic Pen to Cads mumma.

What do you mean by short-shifting?
Short-shifting is shifting before the power usually before entering a hard turn where you don't want to be too high in the revs while on the edge of the tyre.
As for using the clutch, I use it to stop and go and that's all. I've got two GSXR7's with around 60K on each, both have been raced and wheelied hard their whole lives (I bought them both new) and they are as slick as they always have been. Clutchless shifting doesn't damage the box at all and it's better for the clutch and your oil.
You can even drive most cars without using the clutch.

Yeah I just meant shifting without the clutch. Cheers

Yeah I used to do it in the car when I was too tired to move my legs but a few crunching noises in the car's cool, just didnt wanna damage the bike

Occasionally it makes a bit of a noise and jerks, guess I'm just getting used to it.

There's a lot of discussion on gearing R1's at www.r1-forum.com - Just do a search.

down 1 on the front is the same as up 3 on the rear roughly.

might be worth while lookin into a 520 conversion while ur at it. Apparently it makes a bit of a difference.

doing both up or down basically cancels each other out..

oh yeah, changing your gearing will also muck up your speedo, so you'll either ride around with it out, or buy a speedo re-calibrator box, eg. http://www.blackrobotics.com/

if this is true (keep in mind i know dick) is it better to preload thegear box or not .?

I've no idea but I don't preload it. In cars I do because the throw is so much greater. The trick is timing the change to happen at the exact moment the gearbox is completely unloaded.
The clutch contaminates the oil and the gearbox crushes and tears it apart. By not using the clutch you don't get the clutch wear that contaminates the oil - in my experience at least.

A very interesting article. What I know is from my own experience so it's nice to have some of that "feeling" explained :-)
