    The Italians used to have diabolical import taxes on auto components, hence Dellortto carbs, Marzocchi suspension etc.
    Those duties - restrictions were done away with in about 1990 and pretty much immediately Ducati switched to Jap stuff, look at the specs for the 1992 900SS for example:

    And guess what the bikes got a lot better as a result and they sold a lot more of them.
    For the component manufacturers this meant compete or die.
    Magneti Marelli, Brembo obviously could Marzocchi not so much it seems.

    BTW In 2007 Ohlins bought Yamaha out. I think this is part of why you see their stuff on a lot of different bikes now.
