  • KTM 300 vs WR450

Toying with the idea of trading the R1 in on a licensed road trail.
The two I'm considering are the KTM and the WR.
Will be used 99% offroad and most likely trailered to most locations but still want full rego to keep it legal my days of doing runners from rangers are over!!!
Not so much interested in long haul rides probably around 100-150km max a day.
    Pros and cons of each???

Ps not interested in any of the big bore air cooled etc only these two.

300 EXC 2T will be a LOT more fun than the WR450.

The only con of the 300 EXC is that you have to mix fuel.

I test rode the WR450 and a 250EXC 2T and picked the 250; the 300 is similar but with more torque.
Here lies the body of Harold Day
He knew it was his right of way.
He was right, dead right, as he rode along
But he's just as dead as if he'd been wrong.

Depends on how much time you want to spend fixing it vs riding it.
The Kato has more wow and is 2T, but the WR is almost as much fun and more reliable. Don;t be shy of considering a WR250 either. Lighter and will usually keep up with the 450s.

You buying new or secondhand. For the record you won't spend heaps of time working on a KTM300 they are bomb proof and do well over 100hrs on a top end.

Would be a low hour 2nd unit. Doing a top end doesn't phase me can do that myself in a few hours.
Have had 250 2t bikes in the past as well as 4t 250 and a 450.

And at some point you're going to Tard it up (Or not) and go for a play on the road and the pre-mixing will be a pain in the arse...

I knew you would come home Mikey

The only downside to the 300 smoker I can think of is if you do, and you're saying you won't, use it for road riding, neutral throttle sucks on 2t motors!!! They like to be on or off throttle, no 1/4 throttle pootling!!

the bikes u are looking at are chalk and cheese mate.
if u want excitement and seat of ur pants go the 2 stroke.
Nothing wrong with the wr either, just a bit vanilla

People still pre-mix fuel for 2-stroke motorbikes?! I just bought a chainsaw and felt like I had to swot up up stoichiometry and the periodic table of the elements.

The answer is always the one with the most duke two stroke.

Yeah I know this, the WR is the sensible choice, plenty power, parts available and fairly road friendly for a dirtbike. But there is just something appealing about a 300cc 2t road rego'd dirtbike.
I was kinda hoping someone would post up saying how bad the 300exc is.... doesnt look that way....

What type of riding will you be doing?

Trails - tight track - motocross - adventure - sand - hard pack - desert - enduros - endurocross - jumps - flat track - combination? this will determine your choice a little

Trails, single track, days down Kirup etc. Also chuck in a few days up Lano when I feel the need to fly.

Have ridden all this sort of terrain on 250 2 and 4's before as well as 450's I just adjust my riding style
