  • GTWTK the big 4 then what?

For no particular reason I have decided to move on from banking with one of the big 4 banks.
I'm looking at Bendigo bank or Bank of Queensland.
I want to know what you would do in a similar situation and why?

    Which bank?
Does it matter, they're all bastards.

No, not all are bastards. What makes a bastard is shareholders. If your bank doesn't have any, you get treated like royalty. We moved after two of the big 4 disappointed us one too many times. At the time it was Community CPS that is now Beyond Bank. The treatment is the same after over a decade of doing business. Even the branch manager is the same for most of those years. Rates are almost if not as good as the big 4, but the treatment and the quality of advice is second to none. Pretty sure many of the smaller banks have the same business model, members instead of share holders. That's what you want.

been with p&n since long before it was called a bank. they actually used to take the piss out of the word bank. but now they are supposedly doing a donny trump and making the word bank great again.

I've been happy with Beyond Bank and am planning to move most of my shit to them.

                Decent rates

                Good internet banking
You ring up and speak to a PERSON pretty rapidly
They actually called me proactively to tell me my local branch was closing and being relocated - actual pro-active customer service *shock horror*

I think with the big financial shake up after the GFC, a lot of former credit unions, etc. had to (were forced to in order to remain feasible and legally compliant or whatever) become banks for whatever reason. Beyond Bank for example used to be United Credit Union.

I have no legal proof or whatever of that, but from the number that changed there must have been some legal reason for it.

Probably due to increased regulation, and making them have to become banks in order to avoid a legal loophole the big banks could exploit by just becoming credit unions or something to get around the new laws.

On the flip-side i can suggest that you DO NOT go with Adelaide bank (who my mortgage is through currently).

Their internet banking is the fucking worst.

Well, getting away from the big 4, yeah I'm ok with that.

But I would not recommend Bendigo. I used to bank with them and had all sorts of problems with them every time my card expired/replaced.
They never sent myself a replacement at the due time the card expired. I'd have to ring them up and request a new card each time.
Then once I received the new card, there was no new pin sent a day or two later, so I'd have to ring them again and wait for that to arrive.
Each time my card expired, I'd be without access via card to my account for 2-3 weeks.

Then there was the time when somebody helped them selves to my credit card details to click and collect from Office works somewhere over east.
Naturally I rang them up to put a stop to it, They had a problem with that, asking myself to be sure it wasn't me at all.
Seems that if there is a possibility I could jump on a super sonic aeroplane, go from Warwick shopping centre here in Perth for an in person transaction at 9.30am and then click and collected on the other side of the country just after lunch the same day, so they wanted to investigate first to be sure it wasn't me. The bleeding obvious goes straight over their heads. Idiots.

Took them nearly a month to put the mis appropriated funds back into my account, not that it really mattered as it took three weeks to replace the card.

Avoid Bendigo bank like the plague.

Thanks again, I'm thinking about P&N at this stage.
I'd already decided against Bendigo for another reason but that settles that now.

I am refinancing at the end of this year and also looking at P&N.

Unsure if the deal is still running, but they had 3.89% odd with a VISA attached with the same rate. Good for emergencies, but unsure if linked with FF points as I currently utilise that pretty hard.
