  • 50cent pieces

Remember the 2001 50 cent pieces that came out for each state as a
celebration of federation? Hang on to any of the Tasmainian pieces. If
you have them, they may be worth much more than 50 cents. The Treasury
announced today that it is recalling all of the Tasmanian 50 cent
coins that are part of its program featuring images from each state.

"We are recalling all the Tasmainan coins that were issued," A
Treasury spokesperson said Monday. "This action is being taken after
    numerous
reports that pieces will not work in parking meters, toll booths,
vending machines, pay phones, or other coin-operated devices".

The coins were issued in the order in which the various states gained
statehood and have been a tremendous success among coin collectors
    worldwide.

"The problem lies in the unique design of the Tasmanian piece which
    was
created by a University of Tasmania graduate," The spokesperson said.
"Apparently, the sticky tape holding the two 20s and the 10 together
    keeps jamming the coin-operated devices."
