guys , got a prob with one of my hdd's. i've two (one for system, other just to store shit) and am running winxp pro. the hdd i'm using for storage shows nothing when you look in explorer, but if you hit properties, it says it's got bout 70gb on it (it's 80gb WD). tried formatting it, but just got a warning that a program on it was in use blah blah. how does one clean this sucker out?

Might need to do a "chkdsk /f" (without quotes) on that puppy

WinXP, right?

Here you go:

http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documen...-us/chkdsk.mspx

and:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechn...172b5a6a4e.mspx

Basically the disk will be LOCKED while chkdsk is running, you your PC might not be usable. Being a big disk, it WILL take time. Lots of it. So probably a good time to start if off and then go get pissed.

But basically:

open a dos prompt (Start->Run, type "cmd" hit enter)

chkdsk <drive> /f

if it can't lock the drive, it'll ask if you want to check at next reboot. say yes and then reboot.

That should get the disk useable again...

quote from the site worth considering also.....
*If you use chkdsk /f on a very large disk (for example, 70 gigabytes) or a disk with a very large number of files (for example, millions of files), chkdsk might take a long time (for example, over several days) to complete. The computer is not available during this time because chkdsk does not relinquish control until it is finished.*

so perhaps plan a spot of binge drinking and lots of recovery

dear nerds, i tried what you said, and have ended up with a result, but still not quite right. the HDD is now showing 15% full, but there's still nothing i can see in explorer...and it still won't format. now what?

Have you looked at the drive in the disk management section of administrative tools?

If not head into the control panel and then "Administrative Tools", then "Computer Management" , then "Storage(local)" and finally "Disk Management".

This should show all your drives and their relative partitions, sounds to me like the drive has not been formatted or partitioned.

If not then right click on it, select format and then partition it up.

Hope that is of some help to you.

To check whats taking up the space, folder options > view tab > untick hide protected operating system > tick show hiden files.

You could try the long way to reformat but know it works.

Put Windows XP disc in
Press F8 before the windows boot logo.
Wait till it loads then Enter Key
Press F8 accept legal Cr@p
Press ESC for a fresh copy
Delete the partiton you dont want
Format the Unpartitioned Space
F3 to quite
It will self reboot

Then under Windows find the freshly new drive and right click properties Format.

Done.

With the 80gb HD, you have 80,000 MB convert to GB its more like 74GB. Without anything on it.

Make a bootdisk, boot up in dos and format the fucker from there. Nothing will be running off it, unless you have a virus.

glad you got it sorted

What do I win?...a donut (one done on a zx10 of course, not the iced variety)

the disk management tools in XP are like a GUI for fdisk, takes out all the CLI for you, although back in the day fdisk was the go for shizzle.

no probs with the donut thing, just drop into any kawasaki dealer and ask for their demo zx-10...just don't do the donuts in front of the shop, they might get a bit pissed off with you. much nicer donuts with the new zx10 than the old '80s model cruise liner i had....
