  • Buying a new laptop - budget to $1,000

    Ladies and gentlemen of PSB,

Mum has finally decided that she would like to move into the information age.
As such, I'm looking for recommendations for a laptop I can buy up to $1,000.
In general, I expect that she will be word processing, internet browsing/emailing and probably using Skype.
If possible, I'd like to present her with a 'ready to go' 15" laptop for the price.
    So, anybody got an opinion?
    Thanks in advance.

I've only ever used the Dell desktops at work.
              Are they a reliable laptop?
Bear in mind that Mum's as computer savvy as a house brick at the moment.

I'd avoid buying anything that hasn't recently been released. Intel's new chips are out, designed on the latest architecture called "Sandy Bridge". The Sandy Bridge chips are excellent, they have made many improvements on the old architecture, they're a lot more energy efficient. HP's new Elitebooks are running Sandy Bridge and they boast 32 hours out of a charge.

I'm about to buy one of these, they should be out this week:
                  VPCSB16FG : S Series : VAIO™ Notebooks & Computers : Sony Australia

                    Mum's decided she's a traveller.
Just back from Russia, looking for a new destination.

Anything from ASUS...especially anything over $1000. my niece received one 2 years ago for her 21st & she is stoked.
all the tech heads agree its a great product.

If she is travelling, 15" is freaking huge. You wouldn't want anything bigger than a thin 13.3"
