  • .avi files?

Currently googling for answers about .avi files.

Anyone know an easy fix to play them on windowsME?

Try using VLC Player or download K-Lite Codec.

I have both. Both are freeware and work excellent for tons of video files except RealPlayer files.

        oh no! AVIs.

        Firstly, welcome to CODEC hell.

AVI files are just a container. These will contain a video stream and an audio stream. Very commonly the video is MPEG/MPEG2/DIVX and the audio is MP3/AC3.

Very occasionally, they'll have different video/audio codecs, like a Vorbis audio stream (OGG) or the Ogg movie codec (forget it's name).

Used to be that AVI was a Microsoft format containing uncompressed video (not sure what format) and audio in PCM format.

Anyways, if any media file refuses to play, I suggest you get GSpot (http://www.headbands.com/gspot) as it will tell you exactly what codecs you need to play the movie.

Then, you can trot on over to www.free-codecs.com and get the codec you need.
