  • WDTV live or Apple TV?

    K go.
    Needs to be wireless.

Whats you plan with the players? just use it to play media files? stream videos online?
WDTV is easiest with plug in USB HDD or play via network while the Apple TV will only be able to Airplay... unless you get a JB ATV2 which you will need to run XBMC (kind of unstable) or PLEX (you need a file server that can run PLEX Server)

WDTV you can also jailbreak to add more channels if you want too, but not as pretty

WDTV will also play near any format/codec for both audio or video...

Another vote for WD here. Used mine almost 3 years. Can count on one hand the times it's failed to play files.

ATV does itunes sharing and airplay.
WDLive will play other formats, but no airplay.

          both are cheap

Another WDTV it is then. This is for the bedroom and I'd love an Apple TV but codec support, Netflix etc make a WDTV The best option.
Is there a Netflix for porn?

Just to add, it has also managed to decode 24/96 5.1 surround flac audio correctly (not that you will find too many of those around )

I got prompted to upgrade last night.
Just do it. Seriously, if you look up the standing rules of PSB it goes something like this.

                          1. Dont be a dick
                          2. Desmo is allowed to be a dick (sometimes)
                          3. Buy the one with the most Duke
                          4. Dont ask about fixing the search function.
                          etc etc..

I've only had the aTV so can't comment on the WDTV.

I like it, but there is some faffing about to be done to be truly useful (read: Not an Apple product).

I've JBd the aTV and can watch any video format (with another one off purchase for 'ATV Flash') off my NAS, and I'm tunnelling to Netflix on it as well. JB and ATV Flash software is about $30 from memory.
Over wifi it can get a little bit laggy, but most of the time there are no issues. That could be due to the tunnelling and not wifi specifically.

It will also behave like a normal Apple product, so Homesharing and all your other iTunes library stuff remains intact and accessible.

                            Just, more faffing...

I like my atv2 and have no regrets in its purchase. Airplay from phone/tablet through stereo is nice. Extending the airport's wifi network just by being connected is brilliant. Aluminium remote is clean and classy, especially now with XBMC "frodo" sorting out the volume control.

However. It really doesn't want to play outside of AppleLand and the jailbreak/XBMC muckaround is a pain to get through the first time around.

If you already have a bunch of apple gear and want to keep that ecosystem I'd probably go the ATV otherwise I'd look seriously at the WDTV.
