Trying to work out which is best???
1. radeon 9600XT
2.radeon 9800


only differences are:-

9600XT
memory interface 128 bit
engine clock (mhz) 500
memory clock (mhz) 600

9800
memory interface 256 bit
engine clock (mhz) 325
memory clock (mhz) 580

these are only differences so come on boys which one as there is only 10 bucks difference........................................ .......

nah the ram is defined as frame buffer here and is
9600XT = 128mb ddr
9800 = 128 mb ddr
does yours rum far cry? moving grass etc and trees move in wind?
how much yours and where? i found my 2 choices for 300 at ple and austin

i have never played games on it? but its a sapphime radeon 9600xt 256 ddr..

if that means anything. i got dual vga and tv out.. which is pretty kewl.

but i havnt played any games.

it came with all the cables and adapters too.

I think I remember Frag or someone in the know say the XT was the best on the market.. and from my limited knowledge.. more ram = better.. but the speed difference might make big enough difference.. *shrug*

If i were you i think i would get the 9600xt.
But keep in mind that i have heard that some radeon 9800pro se, you can download a bios update and flash the bios to work like a radeon 9800xt.

The 9800 is faster then 9600XT.

They both run the same processor (well pretty much) but 9600 has 4 rendering pipelines compared to 9800 which has 8.

What this means in english is that the 9800 can process more pixels at the same time allowing better resolution at small sacrifice in speed.

If its a 9800SE then the 9600XT is faster but you can "mod" your 9800se to act like a 9800 pro (if your lucky 60% chance) which would then whop a 9600XT.

If you don;t want to fuss about you can't go wrong with either.

Don't worry about specific brands too much but you can see the diff chipset performance. Add the price to the graph and u get a good idea of bang for buck.

Nvidia seems to be leading the pack again but spending 900 on a graphics card is so fucking ridiculus its not funny.

My choice would be a 9800 pro, or 9600xt or if you can find a cheap nvidia fx 5900. Do a google on 9600 9800 and 5900 performance in your specific game as Nvidia and ATI both have strengths in diff games.

LOL.. you can say that every day with computers... But there is a new crop of vid cards coming out VERY soon so might be worth waiting.. will mean that a 9800xt will be the cost of a 9600xt (well one would hope)

Mind if i share some nerdy information.

Depends on how much you want to spend.

The 9600XT is high performance mid-budget performer.
XT is currently the top of the range in the series as it has faster memory speed than the non-xt variants (SE,Normal and PRO).

In terms of on board memory, for current games atm, 256mb isnt need but will be good to have in the future as future games will need all the power you can get. Benchmarks have shown that 256mb is only faster by acouple percent over the 128mb version.

In terms of brand, ATI are the chipset brand and Saphire is the brand of the video card. Saphires are one of the best cards on the market atm for Radeon branded cards.

If you can afford it, then the 9800XT is for you. Buy this card and you can run Unreal Tournament 2004 at 1600x1400 with max details but do you have a big enough monitor to support it? Ideally for me anything bigger than 1280x1024 is too big and thus the 9600XT will do the job.

As an added bonus you can get the 9600XT (depends on brand) with the Halflife 2 game coupon for free which the game is downloaded off the net (when availlable), saving you $100 when it hits the stores in acouple more months. Note with the saphire brand, the 9600xt comes in 2 editions. XT and Bravo, the later contains the coupon and the first is only the card.
All 9800XT have them too.

Steer clear from nvidia cards are they tend to use more power and produce heat alot more. My old (fried) GF4Ti 4600 128mb used a wrap-around heatsink with 2 fans and was slower than my newer Saphire Radeon 128mb which only has a heat sink and no fan and is half the size of the nvidia one. Its also faster and cheaper!!!

We wont be seeing new cards soon as Nvidia has stopped it production line with the FX series. Newer video cards being produced will use a new "Express-PCI" slot opposed to AGP which is meant to increase bandwidth to power hungry games. I assume the new Radeon cards will take the same path.

Anyway, enough said.
