Anybody out there that can explain how FMG can be over $50?
They gained again today while BHP went backwards.

3 announcements today may have had something to do with it.

Other then that it could just be a good day for the company. Who knows?

Fair enough, but I can't see how announcements detailing the purchase of 339 shares divided between 3 directors can cause these shares to climb.
So no one's heard any whispers?

        You just never know.

Maybe they're "chumming the waters" to get a bit of a feeding frenzy going?

          In a word - Greed.
The market is divided into a small percentage of people who know how to make money and a hell of a lot of sheep/Lemmings whichever you prefer. Who really knows why a price goes up or down - All you really need to know is when to buy and when to sell and how to count your profits.

Plenty of people know why prices go up and down.

Does anyone have a good market Sim , ie sign up for free and trade imaginary dollars.

I could research this myself but that would take time. I want to know if any of you know a good one for me to start on.

              Cheers

Millsy the best way to do it is just to trade on paper yourself.

Choose a couple of share you like the look of and keep a spreadsheet of their progress over the course of a few months.

Pick a few penny dreadfuls, 2c companies etc, a few further up the tree and a few blue chips.

Fill out your spreadsheet daily and read the fin. review. Also read any announcements your chosen companies make and guage how that impacts upon the share price.

And Millsy, if you set it up in Excel, there is a little thing-a-ma-jig you can download which will update the current price cell of each stock you've input. Its a handy tool cause it saves you manually inputting every single price.

Who here has made money from shares and thinks its a worthwhile venture investing 5k into the share market.
Like getting somebody external to do it for you

                          Yes its worth it.

Would I get some one else to do it for me? No.

$5k is a nice starting point.

The golden rule.... dont invest more than you can afford to loose.

Theres alot of new mining/exploration companies going to IPO at the moment. Any of them could be a winner. There was one a few months ago for instance that went from something stupid like 5c at the IPO to over 50c as soon as it floated thus turning your 5k into 50k . Some shares have done even more rediculous things than that over time. These are generally high risk though.

You need to decide also how long your in it for, day trader, short term as in a few weeks to say 6 months, medium term 6 months to 18 months or long term 18 months and beyond.

I guess my basis for getting somebody else to invest it is i would rather someone with years experience in the market and research on the companies to use my money wisely and get profit for us both rather then me not knowing what im doing and losing it all.

I understand where you're comming from with that for sure. A managed fund may work for you. Generally they spread the risk across several investment areas or some may allow you to decide where to put the risk etc.

If its something you want to get into a little further the ASX website *clicky* has a heap of useful information for new commers. There's also a number of decent courses available. Dont jump on any of the bandwagon get rich quick courses though.
