I find it weird that I travelled 6 weeks through South-East Asia and had free WIFI (at cafes, restaurants and hostels) within about 1km of me at all times at most places we stayed...

...yet in Perth its incredibly rare to find!!!

hope that many businesses start to go the same way...

BTW while internet surfing is fast, downloads are restricted so don't think you go download movies/porn etc .

When I lived in the city I used what I thought was a free wireless connection. Turns out it wasn't and the guy that payed for it changed the account name to "Don't use my fucking internet!!!" funny thing was he still didn't secure it.

Haha. Usually when you do a scan you come up with a few secure ones named "No wifi 4u", "get off my net", etc.

The backpackers in town (Queen St?) used to have ADSL2+, I'd go there and just download movies they didn't care. Maccas has it, and also Exomod Coffee in Mt Lawley has it (but you ask them for the password).

So true and really f*cking convenient .... and it seemed the cheaper our accommodation the more likely it was to have a handy free wifi spot! Our quiet little 400 baht guesthouse had free wifi but our 2000+ baht hotel required payment to use their wifi

Edit: A mate of mine living near Southport and Cambridge (West Leedy) has just had a neighbour install their unprotected wifi. The SSID is "modem-router". Nubs! I logged into their router (default iiNet Belkin credentials) and forwarded the ports to my mate's lappy and now he's going nuts on downloading (he is also nub).

I have seen some people with unsecured access points but who have mac addressing only on. Now before you say "omg just spoof the mac address" i have no idea how you would find out what mac address it is looking for

Just reroute all your traffic to go through dns...

I am guessing you would have to do a brute force search. 16^12 different combinations if it uses 12 characters, which i think it does.

I only have mac filtering on my wireless at home as using wpa2 or whatever it is called slows down the traffic and 1 meg per second is slow enough for me . I am also counting on the elderly people next door to me not being hackers let alone have a computer

Your forgetting that the computer will broadcast its MAC address when its turned on. Do a search for Jasager - there are always ways in.
