  • Root Canal- Who's had it and how much did it hurt?

I go to the dentist today to get a sore tooth checked out and after some poking about with a sharp hurty thing and some tapping on the tooth and tears and frozen cotton wool and more tears I am informed that the tooth has probably died as a result of a baseball to the face.............................20 years ago.

I never was very quick with some stuff.

So, who else has had root canal work done and how much did it hurt??

And dentists wonder why people hate them.

nah doesn't hurt, had a few done over the years, it hurts more if y ou don't have it done

I don't hate dentists, I get them to use a dam and block so I can't close my mouth and go to sleep

It does hurt your wallet though but with HBF etc it isn't so bad

If you get nervous/hypersensitive to pain when in the chair, just ask for the gas.

The needle being shoved into your gum becomes mildly amusing, quite strange really.

        Definately go for the gas.

Also get checked regulary as if you do have decay in a tooth after a root canal you wont feel it.

If it hurts, they are doing it wrong.
It's quite uncomfortable, but you should be able to keep asking for more needles until there's no pain

It's more of an uncomfortable sensation than any sort of pain, I had to get a root canal after knocking a tooth right out and having it put back in, I didn't have any anaesthetic either.

            Nothing to worry about

If the nerve had already been completely severed, then no, probably not much pain.
In my case, the nerve was still very much connected, and the pulp was inflamed and a bit infected - very painful

I've had quite a few, unfortunately. They shouldn't hurt, but they are uncomfortable. I had the most recent done by an Endodontist, and that was much easier and quicker than the other ones I've had. They have all the specialised stuff that normal dentists don't. If you can afford it (it's a lot more expensive), I'd definitely recommend going that way.

Get ready to feel pain, get ready to grab that seat, get ready to have pain inflicted by a professional who has one of the highest suicide rates in society!!

It won't hurt like a baseball to the face - so you're over the tough part

i had a couple done by 3rd or 4th year dentistry students while unemployed ages ago. it took 4 3 hour sessions each tooth as their work was checked at each step.

they kindof knew what to do, but they were still learning things like: when you hold the drill on a tooth it makes heat enough to blister skin, and that people yell really loudly when you drill out past the base of the tooth.

one session it took 4 ampules of anesthetic to numb for the procedure. i'm not sure they even got the nerve as by that stage i was almost off my face from it all, but the dozen or so needle puncture wounds sure hurt afterwards.

it was done free of monetary charge, you paid for it with pain.

That was the easy bit, knocked me out cold for well over 5 minutes. Didn't remember at least half that day.

I've had two, no biggie. One graduated to a pin and crown due to advances by a two-year-old into my jaw and is now going to become a titanium implant due to a screw-up by the dentist.

It's gonna cost north of $11K, so that's a far more painful procedure....luckily the dentist's indemnity insurance will be paying for it.

my sister had 2 and root canals. both times the tooth was already dead and the nerve with it. she didn't require anesthetic at all.

do all dentists have the gas? i need another wisdom tooth out and want the gas.

the last one was quite an experience, with the lady dentist not quite strong enough to pull it out. she was straddling me with vise grip like pliers reefing on my head. I was, ARRRGGGGHHHHH with every pull. *shudders*
