My grandfather copped a piece of shrapnel in the head in no mans land near Bullecourt, France, about 3 weeks before Armistice Day. Ive been to see where he is buried, such a beautiful setting, typical rolling green fields and a horse paddock next door. Hard to imagine the carnage that must have happened there. I was there by myself, it was such a peaceful place, and one of the most intensely emotional moments of my life.'Tis easier to ask forgiveness, than it is to get permission..

My grandad enlisted with the 3rd Hussars in India as a stable boy (he was born in the garrison as his dad was a Captain) & went on to fight in the tail end of the Boer war, then WW1 for the South Africans & WW2 for the Aussies. I don't remember him as he died the year I was born, but Mum reckons he never talked about any of it. He lost an eardrum in France (The Somme - Battle of Delville Wood) and a kneecap in South Africa when fighting with the Aussies. I spent many months tracing his history as part of the family tree project that I have been working on. They don't make many like him any more.

Glad to see schools observed the minutes silence today and reminded the kids what it was for and how lucky they are because of the men and women who have sacrificed in one way or another.
I'm just waiting for some left wing do-gooder group to try and stop it because it may offend some minority group.
