  • cops running out of room for impounded cars

so on the news last night the cops said they were thinking of wheel clamping cars instead of impounding them, because they are running out of room to store the seized vehicles.

    but then there is this:
Cops take 8827 cars from suspended drivers | Perth Now

Cops take 8827 cars from suspended drivers

POLICE are seizing 24 vehicles a day from drivers who flout licence suspensions and continue to get behind the wheel.

Senior officers today revealed that police had impounded 8827 vehicles since tougher laws targeting people driving under suspension or without valid drivers' licences came into effect a year ago.

In addition, 1851 cars from hoon drivers have been impounded in the past financial year.

But today, Deputy Commissioner Chris Dawson said while the laws had been successful in removing errant drivers from our roads, the number of cars seized had been fewer than initially predicted.

In the wake of the new laws, police had braced for a 10-fold increase in the number of vehicles impounded, with preliminary estimates suggesting about 17,000 vehicles could have been impounded in the first year.

    .....
so apparently they expected more, but have run out of room with less than predicted?

If they are seizing 24 a day, is the threat of having your vehicle impounded really a deterrent then?

A deterrent to driving while under suspension? Nope, because if you observed the conditions of your suspension you wouldn't be able to use that vehicle anyway.

Impound fees / fine / longer suspension maybe.

Can't they park first time offenders' cars on top of repeat offenders' cars?

Should be able to stack them 5-6 cars high.

They run out of space with fewer cars because people aren't paying to pick them up.

clearly it must be working as an effective combatant and deterrent if the numbers keep going up, and "hooning" keeps taking place <sarcasm>

doesn't that pretty clearly spell out that shit doesn't work?
