  • R18 debate continues

South Australia will go it alone if necessary with an R18+ category for video games if there is no national agreement on a new classification system.

Attorney-General John Rau said SA also planned to abolish the MA15+ category to offer a clearer distinction between games designed for children and those designed for adults.

He said games currently classified as MA15+ would be reclassified R18+ or would need to be modified to fit into a milder M category.

Mr Rau will put South Australia's position to the next meeting of the Standing Committee of Attorneys-General in Adelaide in July, seeking the backing of other states and the federal government.

"I will push for the South Australian position on MA15+ games to be adopted nationally, but if it isn't, I'm prepared to go it alone," Mr Rau said on Thursday.

"The outcome being that there will be a serious gap between what children will be getting in games and what adults will be getting in games.

Mr Rau said he was unsure what other states would do in regard to the classification issue.

"There are a divergence of views around the table," he said.

"So there could be some time before there is a clear, national position."

But Mr Rau said the present system stopped adults accessing some games that were freely available in other countries and also offered parents little clear guidance on the content of some games.

"The fact is that many of the games that are now MA15+ in Australia are sold in other countries as R18 games," he said.

"In other words the present scheme is actually bad for parents who are trying to do the best thing for their children."

Mr Rau said under SA's scheme some games would still be refused classification if they were considered inappropriate for anyone to play.

Opposition families and communities spokeswoman Vicki Chapman said the classification issue should have been dealt with by the state government two years ago.

"It's very important we get on with the proper regulation of this material to protect our children," she said.

What in the seven shades of dirty fuck is wrong with SA's pollies, first Atkinson who did more backflips than a epilieptic gymnast, now the new bloke who came out and said that he would support the addition of R18, but only if MA15+ scrapped altogether.

Mr Rau if you are reading this, please don't fuck about with this issue, just get the R18 added, enough is enough.

DO NOT TOUCH - Probably the most unsettling thing to read in braille.
