Road Trip To Alice and That Big Red Rock

Heading off to Alice Springs next year with the Brother and Sister in law.

The plan is to go via the Nullabor to SA then up to Alice.

Brother in law and possibly I in short stints will be riding his Harley to Alice for the Ulysses AGM then trucking it back.

The girls will be driving a campervan as support vehicle and accommodation.

We plan to return via Uluru then somehow through the 'middle' in the van.

Anybody done it, places worth stopping for a look etc.

I used to work maintaing the black fella comunitys (Ngaatyatjarra) out that way, Or giles metiorogical station as many know it.
The road is good most the year round, a dude with a grader towing a trailer then a caravan grades it year round.
Unless it rains, then of course all stop.
The peterman ranges are very nice , also a big group of sheoaks just on the west aussi side of the boarder i found unexpected.
even though the Great sandy has a heap of them .
LA (Laverton) and Warberton there is fuel , and Giles.
The stints are not to bad driving between towns (comunitys)
Its dry land, both wether and piss.
Dont fuck up, (hide your grog)
Camp out of towns , get up with any sounds and check your area.
An ideling car will atract nastys (creepy crawlies that bite)

I dont need to tell you its isolated, your old enough to know how to travel this great land of ours.
Its awsome country out there, respect it and enjoy.

If you can check out near warrakuna , some near perminate water out that way, a waterfall and all.

The Olgas are pretty great too (and reasonably close to Uluru). I found it to be a much more enjoyable walk around than the one around the rock.

In terms of things closer to Alice, Ellery Creek Big Hole is good (go for a swim, I dare you), as is Ormiston Gorge and Simpson's Gap. Most of the stops along the West Macdonnell Ranges are great little gorges or pools for picnics, a short explore or rock wallaby spotting.

Or amateur geologising, if you're into that kind of thing.

As others have said the Central Desert Rd is passable most of the time. It was pretty rough when we last did it (some time ago) from the Olga's back to Laverton but I personally wouldn't take an 'on road' van up that way. While it might be ok, it will be hammered and also restricts where you can go. There's heaps to see and do out there so flexibility is important.
