Home Theater Sound System

I need to pick a new surround sound system for the home theater tomorrow from Harvey Normans but can't admit to knowing much about them. Does anyone have any feedback based on the units shown in the link:

Speakers, Home Theatre, Sound System, Surround Sound, 3D Blu Ray

I need to keep it under a grand, but can easily do cheaper as it's really only for the kids when they are watching movies & accoustic engineers they aint.

Also - can you play the original DVD's on a Blue Ray player?

I have a much more expensive set up for my home theatre than those, but only because I also listen to music through it. If it is just for the kids room, and you really aren't looking for high quality sound, pretty much any of those would do. It might be worth sticking to the same make as your TV as they often have systems that link up together that make them easy to set up and manage. Yes you can play DVDs on Blu Ray players, the only issue might be the region coding. If the DVDs are local (not US, or Euro zone) then they should be fine.

For surround sound having wireless rear speakers can be good because you don't have to try to figure out how to run the wires around the place. These days you can't really go far wrong with this sort of gear, even the cheapest is still good. If you were after something for yourself I'd say add a couple of hundred to the budget and go Yamaha.

Just a personal preference, but I would be buying something like the Yamaha and then a separate Blu-ray Player.

Just another thought. Some of the thin upright pole speakers may look good, but may be a bit fragile to survive a kids room. Wireless rear speakers would be a big advantage. I would go and have a listen to some of them either at Hardly Normals, the Good Guys or JB Hifi. And remember the prices are negotiable
