I've flashed a few drives in my time, and it usually works. That said, though, the last drive I tried to flash was the DVD-RAM drive in my laptop, and it ended up frying the firmware. The weird thing was, though, when I initially tried to the run the patch it said "Drive already updated, no changes necessary".. and hasn't worked since.

Check out http://forum.rpc1.org/portal.php and search to see if your drive has an updated firmware available; as not all drives do!

I flashed my father's DVD drive cause he kept changing the regions to play imported DVD's, and after 5 changes it locked to the last change. Flashing it worked a treat and no more problems. Just have to be careful with power spikes or fluctuations during the process. I ran a UPS just to make sure. Not to say it isn't risky, but I had no problems.

I've done it & it worked, but there's always a risk involved. Don't even think of proceeding unless you're 100% certain the flash is specific to the exact model of your drive - after that, you takes the risk yourself.

              I flashed my ADSL router/modem.

Did it a couple times cause it was saying incorrect firmware upgrade.

              It works fine.

I have heard horror stories though...

I flashed my old motherboard (asus a7v333) which killed it. Had only just finished installing the bastard, put the OS on, and flashed it. Took the PC apart and took the fucker back Replaced it and never flashed anything again.. until my new mb

gigabyte have dual bios on their mb's tho, so if you stuff one up, it boots off the other one fine, and you can recover it

anyway yeah, do it if you're pretty confident or it's still in warranty..

I've flashed a few members of the public but never any drives?
...and on the seventh day God said "Let there be light!", and Chuck Norris said "say please!"

Most of the newer software for flashing is getting much better (Most mobo manufacturers supply windoze based software for flashing their boards).

A lot of the software will tell you if the flash went ok, and if it failed more often than not you just run the flash again before turning the power off....

That being said, most companies will state somewhere that they don't support flash fuckups on their equipment, its all at your own risk blah blah blah blah....

If it fails, just take it back and say it just died on you, power spikes on their own have been known to kill flash rom

*Not that I have ever returned gear for clients in that condition*
Nitrous is like a hot girl with STD's, you know you wanna hit it, but you are afraid of the consequences!

its not too bad if u do fuck it up, if the drives still under warranty that is, the place u got it from can send it back to the manufacturer and they will make it all better happened to an old Motherboard i had, got the wrong update and i farked up real good, but it was under warranty and got sent back and fixed
