  • Things that are wrong with modern music.

I like to think that I have a wide taste in music, from Beethoven to the Beatles, from Mozart to Muse.

It saddens me to see that modern music is all moving in the same direction.

    Things that annoy me:
-Music must be at full volume all the time, there si no build-up or variation in volume anymore.
Look at this for what I mean. Sinatra was the master at building up a song to a climax (yes, it was deliberately sexual).

If you don't feel yourself being lifted at the climax of that song, there is something wrong with you.

    - Going on from that, the concept of 'phrasing' and meaningful pauses has been list

Sometimes leaving a bar without playing anything says more than going full tilt 100% of the time.

Fuck me, I feel like an old fart posting this, but I blame my 10.6% alcohol homebrew and an attack of nostalgia.

Does anyone else have any thoughts?

I think your old too Barfridge

edit: for the sake of contributing something useful I'll add that I hate hate hate commercial radio networks. More so people who listen to them and then rubbish JJJ because it has too much talking. OK idiots I'll just tune in to 90.shite FM and listen to adverts and whats on channel bullshit on television tonight will I? I'd rather have silence than listen to these pedestrian brainwashing networks.
Maybe you won't love every song but you get to hear new songs often months before the commercial ones pick up on any that won't offend their listeners cotton wool brains, and then play the shit out of it. But thers not a god damn thing I'd listen to on their stations.

valid point, but sometimes old farts are right. Experience counts for something, there is more to music than death cab for cutie and my chemical romance

I was lucky that I spent the first half of my life with my Mum, listening to 60's, 70's and 80's music.

The second half I was raised by my Grandparents, my Grandma in love with 40's and 50's jukebox classics, with songs that have meaning yet are upbeat.

My Grandfather listens to classical music, and can whistle so well he can put some birds to shame.

So as you can guess, my musical taste is varied. My MP3's go from the Beatles to Nine Inch Nails, via Aqua and Barry White (plus about 3GB of Oasis).

I find when I listen to the radio, I'm pulling apart the song. I disect the song, listen to the repetetive backing track, the squeaky vocals, how much the backing vocals take over in the chorus, how much content the song has (whether it's one verse and a chorus, or it has several verses that make sense) and whether the lyrics have any meaning to them.

I know there are songs out there that aren't supposed to have meaning - such as dance music - and I don't mind it. If I'm having a hard day I would rather listen to Love Generation than listen to Unchained Melody.

On the other side of the spectrum, "Emo Music" is too hard on the lyrics. 17 year olds writing about the end of the world when they failed school or their gf/bf broke up with them? They need to listen to songs suck as Tears in Heaven, to really know what painful lyrics are.

In general, what I listen to depends on my mood. If I'm having a blonde day, I'll listen to mainstream pop so I can zone out. If I'm feeling uber-loved-up, I'll put on some past classics. If I'm feeling confident, a bit of good old rock. Feeling happy, some dance music.

I love music in general, but these days most "musicians" are just cash cows for big companies.

I'm just impressed that someone else has heard of Death Cab for Cutie

While I agree that modern music can be utter shite, I do love all kinds of music.
Like Daise, I will listen to something depending on my moods. Jazz, metal, punk, rock, classical and 'oldies' all feature in my music collection, among others. As well as a few mindless dance tracks that are very catchy (Pendulum anyone?)

All in all, I think modern music does leave something to be desired, but I have grown up on this crap and I love it
I do, however, understand the beauty of 'real music'... A well written song, rhythm and melody, with proper instruments and someone who can actually play them... Oh and someone who can actually sing...

I listen to modern music more often than I will something older. Comes with being 20 I suppose
