Ok .. so Ive decided on a camera and a lense or two (well I think I have)

Im just looking at a portable storage device to use while I'm travelling.

Anyway ... does anyone have one ?? or if you were going to get one which would you get ?

These are a few of the ones Ive looked at so far.

So far Im leaning towards the Canon M80 .. but Im willing to see what others think.

thats pretty expensive and there are much better out there.

Check out some of the archos or cowan units. (My preference would be with cowan)

          Dunno about any of those.
I just took my portable hdd into a 'net-cafe and used their pc to copy the photo's to the hdd and burn a CD for backup.
Overall cost, nearly SFA. Especially if you won't use something like that particularly often.

I once had a cheap and nasty one like the ones shown in your "B&H" link that I used at the track but it wasn't that reliable so I just bought some more CF cards.

Yeah I have been thinking about just having a heap of SD cards.

Im just trying to get an idea of how these things actually work as I dont really want to pay that much for a dud item.

Dugy did you have a look at some of the ones on the later pages for that B&H link ??

CompactDrive PD70X - these get a great review on dpReview.com. So long as you dont need to view the images - just store 'em. Can't comment about this particular reseller tho...

Portable Storage (PSD) - CompactDrive PD70X or PD70X Hyperdrive - - Technobox Australia

Well I reckon the M80 would be a cool toy to have, being Canon I can't imagine it would let you down.
But at $1k your certainly paying for it.
I dunno anyone that has one though.

Both my cameras are Canon so thats one of the reasons I was thinking it would be a good choice. Less likely to suffer from compatibility issues and alike.

Well my Iriver H320 MP3 does exactly that and its got a USB host function so i can hook up a card reader and pull the photos straight off.

If you want more storage and a newer thing creative have a 60gb player similiar to my iriver. It also has MP3, radio, voice recording, video player, text viewer, image viewer, usb host.

Or do you specificially want a storage only thing.??

I have an ipod etc .. so I could get a card reader for that too I spose.

                      Thats an idea.

I know the epson has been out for a long time now and has a proven record of reliability.

Can't really comment on the canon.

There are some cheaper ones which work fine, I bought a Vosonic with 120gb drive which has never let me down doing weddings and other functions.

But if you need to 100% trust your photos for professional work etc, then I would spend the extra on the canon or epson.

                            Cool Toy yes! But....

                            Either
                            1) Use more memory cards as you need. Infact you can buy them on the road pretty much everywhere too don't forget (unless you are in the middle of the desert). Whats the break even point? 100x2gb memory cards ?
                            2) The laptop thing

Remember, most photos you take will be shit. Just delete those ones (when on holiday I review all the photos I have taken during down time or before bed each day) and you probably wont have any space issues.

Card reader + your ipod mate.

$20 solution and it works well.

I used my H340 all over Europe, worked a treat except the iRivers only had USB1.1 so they were a touch on the slow side.
