  • Cost of Sorry

I know this is gonna be related to the other threads that have been burning the wires lately, but just saw a breif story on a news update.
A Victorian member of the stolen generation has been the first to begin legal procedings against the government following Kevin Rudds Sorry speach.
Didnt take em long to start demanding compensation now then did it, which is why Howard refused to say it.

The claim is being made against the Victorian Govt, who just happened to apologise about 10 yrs ago (actually in 1997 and re-iterated in 2000).

He's not the first to claim compensation, he's just the first since the Federal Apology.
Bruce Trevorrow last year (2007) became the first stolen generations Aborigine to be awarded compensation by an Australian court. He has been awarded a total of $775,000 after a South Australian court ruled his removal from his family caused long-term depression.
    Also:
Tasmania, is the only government to establish a compensation fund for Aborigines.
The state government announced last month it had paid 84 forcibly removed children and 22 of their descendants.

              not nice at all.

The only reason I posted about the compensation claim was becasue it sucks that now the govt has said sorry Im sure we will see more of this sort of thing.
All its gonna do is bog down in the courts and the only people to benefit will be the lawyers who dont really care whether they win or lose.
Meanwhile the taxpayers will be paying for both sides and getting no real answers like usual.

All the states have said Sorry at least a decade ago, Tassie has been paying from a compensation fund they set up, but the rest of the states and the feds refused that idea, instead making the claimants go through the courts the same as any other person.

It's the same as when the kids that had been abused by the Christian brothers in the orphanages made their claims as well, each was treated on a case by case basis, so that the validity of each case was tested.

As with the Christian Bros claims some were found proven others rejected, the same will happen to these claims as well.

Just get rid of the ALS then see how many want to take it to court when they have to pay the legal bills instead of US the taxpayers

Isn't it wonderful, now watch the people who opposed the GST use it to strip money of us to pay for this "Sorry" in the future.
