  • Happy Humpday

    Fuck today is slow.

In the interest of garnering some friendly forum discussion.

What myth/urban legend really annoys you and why?

For me, it's mostly the ones about drinking,

"oooh, I don't mix my drinks, it gives me the worst hangovers."

I call bullshit. Drink less, have less of a hangover.

    Hi Leefty!

My humpday is ok. Just had a boring sales rep come in to talk about pumps blah blah. Then he noticed the PSB sticker on my helmet, and so we spent the next half hour talking about bikes.

    Nice to meet you drfunk.

My urban legend would be the one about somebody wedging razor blades in the joins of waterslides. It's just so dumb

Its not really a legeng/myth, but my friend was of the belief that at the casino playing roulette, if it has been red like 5 or 6 times in a row then its pretty much GUARANTEED to be black on the next spin...

...it took a long time, some statistics books and pretty diagrams to convince him otherwise...

Today is boring, I've skipped work to sit an exam - only to realise that the exam is at 3 and only an hour long and incredibly easy.
I could have been earning money instead of studying this whole time.

That will teach me for TRYING

Eating before swimming causes stomach cramps.

          And therefore death.

          -------------------

It is just plain annoying, if i want to have a burrito and swim 400m relay I'm going to do it.

            Hi Lefty
Slow day here, done lots of things I should have done before just to pass the time.

Most hated urban myth is that not all women are hormonal crazy bitches

Pure speed in sixth gear on a 5,000 foot straightaway is one thing, but pure speed in third gear on a gravel-strewn, downhill, ess turn is quite another.

Is that urban myth like the one that not all Ducati's suffer from Italian electrics?

                Hi Lefty,

I have long since accepted that lots of people believe things I never will, and for the most part I just accept it. I am sometimes annoyed by the myth that most or all "natural remedies" are just as effective as conventional medical treatments, only safer.

                    Hiya Princess Deb,

This should make you feel better:

"For all of those people that say that we have been using natural remedies and herbal healing etc. for thousands of years. You know we tested all of this stuff, the things that worked became MEDICINE, all the rest was left for the hippies."

Having to pay money to buy a book on magnet therapy for my mum shat me off to no end. Because I was spending my hard-earned on a crock of shit that she asked me to buy and wouldn't accept an explanation of the fact that there isn't a single independent study or ounce of empirical evidence demonstrating it to work, nor references to university studies echoing this, because somebody wrote a book and must therefore know more than anyone else.

Just for shits and giggles, I've reversed the alignment, and after that realigned only 50% of the magnets in her pillow, and she's never noticed a difference. But I don't necessarily want to take away the placebo by telling her. Good to have insurance for when she makes me buy more hoodoo or starts treating real illnesses with it beyond just convincing herself she doesn't need pain killers.

Everyone has a right to live.

That one shits me a lot.

Hey you could write up about your independent study!

Then give your mum the book for Chrissy :spiteful:

I'm personally happy enough with the Penn & Teller point of view. (At one point in the article, they got a magnetically inert piece of metal and painted it to look like a magnet, then duped someone into believing it worked.)

But hey, it's good enough for today tonight.

And yes I think it is the same because the only problem I've had is electrical
