Mountain bike, you can always ride them on road, try that with a pure road bike. If you want to do a lot of road riding, changing to slicks only takes 5 mins.

I ride a specialized fsr, similar to this but a few years old, and they are fantastic.

I just bought a Giant Yukon
http://www.giant-bicycles.com/au/030.000.0...asp?model=10003

Its an awesome bike, about 7 fiddy it cost, but I got a few extra things on mine so it cost a little more. One thing that I got that I was quite surprised about when I heard about it are these hybrid tyres where they have knobblies on the outside and a slick type pattern on the inside of the tyre so you can go on or off road which suits me perfect
The kneebone's connected to the something, the something's connected to the red thing, the red thing's connected to my WRIST WATCH

Get a mountain bike and put slicks on it.

$1000 will get ya a pretty decent rig.
Personally, i'd go a hardtail with rim brakes (not a fan of discs......too much maintenance).
You should get Shimano Deore 27 speed gearset for that price (If you shop around for specials) with a fairly decent fork.

I've got a specialised and a Giant.....both excellent bikes.

GT make a pretty decent bike in this price range too.

serious about fitness?*salesmans smile*

spend the extra dosh and get a kx250......more fun than peddling and if you can hang on for more than 10min at a time you'll be fit as fark. I know a peach of a bike going for a song at $2500...'96 model, original plastics and graphics ......and you don't have to peddle shit.....

It's your birthday aaargh1...treat yourself....

Get a good quality mountain bike, preferably Hard-Tail with either lockout front suspension or suspension you can adjust on the fly. Go talk to TBE in Nedlands (The Bicycle Entrepreneur) they have a lot of stock and really good people working there. For rides around the foreshore a road bike = not the best

yeah it sounds like from people who have replied, a front susp only bike is the way to go ..... i prolly do prefer to have a hard tail cos i used to race bmx and after all i am not going to go downhilling like a psycho.

thanks for the help

I would definitely go with a hardtail, I bought a bike with the mid suspension and it was shit, I know the newer ones are better designed but im not sure about getting a decent one for 1k

and yeah the yukon was $750 and its an 06 model

ok the money is spent and after all ya advice i went with something that was along the lines of what "youse guys" recomended.... hard tail, susp lockout on the fly, and low maintenance rim brakes, apparently the last one in perth before the new models come..... ridden it a couple of times and boy it does sueley hurt my arse, getting used to the seat is going to be the only thing holding me back....
it looks like this
.

Mate, that is fucking tip top.........exactly what the doctor ordered.

Got all the good gear on it too i see.
Great gear spread (you'll climb a fucking cliff with that 22/34)

If you got that for $1000 you have got a fantastic buy

Don't wuss out and change the seat for a softer one tho......your arse will get used to it after a few (lots) of miles.

i could not let it go cause rrp was $1700 but i got it for $1100 odd dollars

i did have a fuggin laugh when i put it in the lowest gear and rode, i was giggli'n like a 12yo who just found a playboy, doin about 15000 rpm and only going about .01kmh
i was hoping that the gear on it was alright cause being away from the pushy scene awhile i had not heard of sram, but i went for it mostly cause its a cannondale, i love brand names(the curse of generation x) and from my road racer i knew that most of the ride is in the frame so hence i may have sacrificed only a little bit for parts quality for frame "goodness".......
so far so good no stone chips or scrathes yet

ps thanks for ya help
