  • Midnight to Dawn Ride Report OLD 2003 Topic!

For those of you who are interested and didn't go (Or for the few of you that did), there was a midnight to dawn ride on Saturday night for the variety club of WA.

Around 100-125 bikes (By my rough approximation) showed up for the ride which started at the BP servo on Abernethy Rd in Kewdale. The run was a 'shaker' run - designed to keep everyone together as a group and ride through all the upper class suburbs as a group and wake everyone up.

Ride went well and everyone was mostly well behaved. Only downer being the attitude of the police.

DC and I went down together and stuck together for most of the ride. On the first stage however we pulled up at a set of lights (~100 of us) turning left and there just happened to be a copper turning right at the same intersection. We're all grinning at this guy who has promptly shit his dacks and got on the blower and within 2 mins PolAir is over us blasting us all with the spotlight. At this point DC and I were around the rear of the main group. I notice a cop right on my rear wheel out of nowhere which nobody else has noticed, so I slow right down, losing ground on the main group in the process - the idea being not only to give him nothing to do me for, but to block the main group from an unwelcome tail.

Anyways, I crest a hill and head down towards a stop sign, ~20-40 metres behind the main group, some of whom roll the stop sign, some of whom don't. I make sure and stop thanks to the smurf humping my rear wheel, and when I make the right he decides I'm obviously not going to be a source of fines to pay for the wasted fuel PolAir used chasing us and boosts it past me and turns the lights on - pulling over the last rider in the group who was DC who had hung around to wait for me as he had noticed I dropped back.

At this point I've lost alot of ground on the main group and roll past to see the man hassling DC, I consider stopping but figure I'll only inflame the situation so I ride on, catching up to the group after a few minutes. We end up at a BP servo all gasing up, me waiting to see what has happened to DC and chatting to another few blokes in the process. DC eventually pulls up and promptly yells, "FUCK!" (If anyone was there they'll remember that) as the man had decided to book him for rolling the stop sign - despite the fact that as I was cresting the hill the last bikers went through and at best he would've caught a glance at a few tail lights making their way around the bend - 3 points and $150 thank you very much. I'll let DC finish that particular story off.

After having written out the notice to DC the cop sat and watched him - hoping obviously to follow him to find out where we were. But DC sat there and did bugger all until the cop got the hint and fucked off - big respect to DC for that move - before rolling off to find out where we'd ended up.

The cops did try and chase us for most of the night but because of the way our route meandered around in a seemingly random fashion most of the time we dodged them or they were stuck going the opposite direction and couldn't catch up. We also had a few security cars getting on the blower though, especially when we stopped at servos.

At the end of the night nobody binned their bike, though a few guys on cruisers clipped or ground bits and bobs of their bikes on median strips and round-abouts and the like. The contact that we had with the public was always guys out on their lawns waving to us as we went past which was cool, and the only thing that put a downer on the evening was the harrassment by cops who surely could've found better things to do after midnight on a Saturday - as I assume the burglary problem hasn't sorted itself out yet.

If anyone from the board was there, they'll know DC from the commotion at the first stop and they would've probably seen me on my black/silver gixer too. Next time feel free to come up and say ello.

Top night, DC intends to fight the charge of running the stop sign and any advice etc which anyone has for the situation would come in very helpful and would I'm sure be much appreciated.

Nice report Chris, good to see ya had a good time. Well done to DC but at a cost mate. Damn Smurfs!!!!

Would've looked good from PolAir though, I'll give them a call today and see if they got any footage on the FLIR camera.

      Good report Chris, thanks.

Ahhh the coppas. What did they hope to achieve by doing that.

So on the eight day, after wasting time faffing about with unimportant guff like heaven & earth & the waters & sky & creatures [& having a wee kip] & man.... God created PSB (GenesiSX-R1000)

You should've heard the sound of >100 bikes hooning in the tunnel.

          Wikkud!

There was no hooning. As I told the cops who booked me, *cough-cough-cunt-cough-fat-cunt-cough-cough*, we were very well behaved, no hoons or dillitants among us. Just motorcycle enthusiasts raising money for charity.

            It did sound awesome though.

I'll probably be unpopular for saying this (nothing new there ) , but this event is a PR disaster for WA's biking community. Despite being for a great cause, riding through the influential suburbs of Perth in the middle of the night and waking everyone up does fuck all to boost our already tarnished image in the eyes of Joe Public. Remember too, that those same influential suburbs house the judges and politicians.... Hope nobody who rides a motorcycle had a court date Monday with any of 'his honours' who might have had a bad night's sleep because 100+ bikes rolled past his door in the middle of the night.

Most of us did have a grumble about it during the night actually. There is a limit to the amusement that the cycle of sit in second gear, turn, rev it a little, indicate, repeat can have. So even from a rider's point of view the run wasn't the best in terms of road choice.

At the end of the day though it was a 'mystery' run, so pfft, what can ya do?

Chris and I were quite disappointed that it was a "Shaker run". It's the kind of yobbo thing that gets us nowhere fast. But eh, fuck'em if they can't take a joke. Those influential people are the same wankers whom allowed the move of the flight paths for passenger jets over my house a few years ago. Suck my anodized flange yuppies.

The run was no different to any other protest or rally. people inconveniencing others to get their cause heard. Name one rally that hasn't had somebody pissing blood about how they can't go about their day because of lefties or hippies or whinging fucking teachers. One night's sleep is a small price to pay to help out sick and dying kids I think, and if anyone disagrees with that, they can fall down hard on my dick and choke.

I personally would like to see the run turn into a much bigger event, like the toy-run. Get some community support as well as make the WA bike community a little more close knit. Except those two stupid pratts on the cruisers who kept trying to undercut all us crotchrocketers on corners. They too can fall down hard those two-tone paint, chap wearing, saddlebag carrying pride warriors.

I don't disagree with you there. How was the money raised, just via the rider's donations :?: If so, they could still raise the money without pissing people off. I know residents along the river run route were getting pretty cheesed off with the night runs that went along there and were starting to draw the heat onto people who rode it. In isolation the midnight to dawn is no big deal, but running it through the same suburbs that are already complaining isn't helping the rest of us.

As for the tossers on their land barges....

After the fiasco with the coppa on stage one, after that DC and I were always either four or five bikes from the front of the group or in the middle.

Doesn't pay to be on the fringes when there are coppas about.

We weren't, I was usuing that as an example of when a mob people get together and fuck up traffic or the peace and quiet of the day. "protest OR rally" - examples of said events.

Your comments about upset rich wankers are probably warranted and it was good to see you stuck by your guns by not attending. Keep up the good work and be sure not to ride past anyones house past 19:30 without first sound-proofing your bike, or you could just wheel it past with the lights off so that you don't shine your lights through the window. Soon you'll be known as the most considerate guy in Australia, though sick kids might think you're a cun t.

As said before, nobody knew where the run was going until we got there, we all attended in an effort to a) go on a social ride and help out the Variety Club kids.

The noise would have lasted a couple of minutes tops in each location and then faded into a distant drone before disappearing completely. Most of the ritzy fuckers would have probably been passed out from quaffing gin and tonics all night and sexually harrassing their hired staff. The original plan had supposedly been to rip past Rose Hancock's place; tell me THAT wouldn't be supported by every other member of the public.

What we did that night probably gave more back to the WA chariatble community than each entire suburb does all year. 100 or so bikes (give or take) at a minimum donation of $15 per person (there we a few pillions) was a significant donation. The money that was collected to pay some of my fine was also sent to the variety club too because i have no intention of ever paying that fine and the night was primarily about the Variety Club.

Every special event the hold at the showgrounds or the races that has fireworks, Rally Australia, that useless Christmas parade and myriad of other events all piss people off with the noise, light and crowds they pull. At least this one had a point and purpose.

Do you think that it is likely that Geoff "Holy shit, I won?!" Gallop is going to wake up the next morning and say, " Well fuck, those bikes woke me up last night, I think I'll push through a few bills to make life harder for them."

There has been no mention in the papers about the run, none on the local radio stations. Two of the local papers had a 120 word mention of it and that was it. The most negative attention that the ride would have had was probably along the lines of:

"Did you hear that racquet last night, dear?"

"Mmmm, sure did. Pass the jam please."

It was a one off event so it's not like it's creating a public nuisance or disturbing the peace.

To recap: You don't like it, don't come. You don't approve, I don't mind. You have a better run, I'd be happy to ride on it.

:? See, that's the good thing about this Internet thingy..... nothing like anonymous abuse to brighten your day  . I wasn't criticizing anyone who did the ride - far from it - and good on everyone for putting their hands in their pockets. Regarding the noise, you're entitled to your opinion, mine is that deliberately antagonising people who often aren't fond of motorcyclists anyway isn't a good idea. :| It just reinforces their misconception that all motorcycle riders are inconsiderate louts. That's PR we can all do without.

Internet: It's not just for porn anymore.

I'm not randomly or anonymously abusing anybody here. Give me a phone number or swing by and if I think you're a c-unt I'll say so.

My point is that as was inferred, there was no deliberate malice or antagonism on behalf of anyone except perhaps the run-organizer. A nasty side effect of 100 bikes cruising past will be noise. Small price to pay for the benefits of the run.

The majority of the unintiated people in their beds wouldn't know if it was a procession of bikes or cars unless they saw it. Our public perception is bullshit and will always be that. Anyone who has ever split a lane and hung even a shoelace over the white line or not indicated, or who has ever broken the speed limit cannot condemn or piss and moan about the bad PR that such runs or any other behaviour causes without bathing in hypocracy.
