"After one year, 88% of those in the [free heroin] group were still in treatment, compared with 54% in the methadone group."

Who wouldn't still be in treatment when you get free heroin?

The purpose of the study was to understand the efficacy of legalization, combined with regulation. Since most of the societal dangers associate with drug use are due to the drugs' illegality, the idea is that if addicts seek treatment they'll be kept in a program that will monitor them. In this scenario, hopefully, their usage will discourage them from seeking other sources and/or means.
If supplying pharmaceutical grade smack to an addict in a clinical setting can help cure their addiction then it should definitely be investigated. I'd much rather they were given appropriate assistance - then they might not be tempted to do my house over to finance their addiction.

The ones who were actually cured, perhaps? OK the number of dropouts is not stated, but if 12% of participants are actually cured of their addiction then I'd guess it's success rate would be at least as good as a methadone programme.

Wasn't anything about curing the addiction, just saying that if they are given free drugs in treatment they stay in treatment.

Quite right, but I found title amusing ^_^

Should we stop all these theft based crimes committed by addicts, by giving them free drugs though?

Staying in treatment doesnt seem to imply that they actually get off the gear.

They only tend to commit crimes against others when they are not on the "gear" and require some.

"Heroin cures heroin addiction" implies a cure to me. But even going back to the LAT article it isn't at all clear what the cure/dropout rate is for either strategy.

If it's possible to reduce violence, theft, drug overdoses and poisonings by pursuing non-traditional treatments then it's the only logical thing to do - to completely rule it out for no other reason than "drugs are bad, mmkay" is like cutting off your nose to spite your face.

Heroin sure does cure heroin addiction.

One free "hot-shot" should "cure" it just fine
