  • Mates in Construction WA

    Hi there Motorbike Enthusiasts...

On behalf of MATES WA, we are keen to connect with your community and share our mission and the amazing journey of our youth ambassador, 1000cc Superbike rider Sam Clarke.

MATES is a NFP charity established in 2008 to reduce the high level of suicide among Australian construction workers.

MATES provides suicide prevention through community development programs on sites, and by supporting workers in need through case management and a 24/7 help line. We serve the construction industry in Queensland, New South Wales, South Australia and Western Australia.

MATES was established in response to a major report on suicide (the ‘AISRAP Report’) within the Queensland Commercial Building and Construction Industry. This report found that suicide rates in the industry were higher than the Australian average for men, and that youth suicide within the industry could be as much as 2.38 times more common than among other young Australian men.

The MATES program is based on the simple idea that suicide is everyone’s business. If the building and construction industry in Australia is to improve the mental health and well-being of workers and reduce suicide, then it cannot be left to mental health professionals:
everyone in the industry must play their part.

Working for the construction industry in general, MATES is independent of employers and unions and never works directly for an employer. Programs are delivered across the industry regardless of employer or union affiliation.

Acknowledging one of the highest 'at risk' demographics of young male construction workers (aged 18 - 24 yrs), we embarked on identifying and appointing our inaugural Youth Ambassador Sam Clarke.

We are proud of Sam who not only won the 1000cc Superbike Race Round at Collie on Sunday, but also set a blistering fastest track record of 1:08.16 (2.7km race circuit).

MATES WA in collaboration with the Motorcycle Racing Club of WA is planning a Free Community Funday for MATES WA on 29th November 2020 to coincide with the fourth and final round of the 1000cc Superbike competition.

The Free Family Fundraising Day is proudly sponsored by our mates at Retravision and will be held at Barbagello Raceway in the City Of Wanneroo.

Motorbike enthusiasts will be able to register to ride “ Lap of Honour for Your MATES” – Recognising the MATES lost to Suicide, and will be led by MATES WA Youth Ambassador Sam Clarke flying the MATES Flag.
